There is a remarkable story from Texas this week about a Planned Parenthood clinic director who has left the nation’s largest abortion provider after a dramatic change of heart. For eight years Abby Johnson had been a part of Planned Parenthood. Yet, after seeing an ultrasound of an abortion procedure she walked out of her clinic and quit. She is now supporting a local pro-life group with a crisis pregnancy center down the street from her old clinic.

“I just thought I can’t do this anymore, and it was just like a flash that hit me and I thought that’s it,” said Johnson. She handed in her resignation October 6 after working as the Bryan, TX Planned Parenthood Director for two years.

According to Johnson, the Planned Parenthood clinic she ran was struggling under the weight of a tough economy, and her superiors began changing its business model from one that pushed prevention, to one that focused on abortion. She claims that she was told to bring more women into her clinic who wanted abortions. “The money wasn’t in family planning, the money wasn’t in prevention, the money was in abortion and so I had a problem with that,” said Johnson.

“I feel so pure in heart (since leaving). I don’t have this guilt, I don’t have this burden on me anymore,” Johnson told reporters. She describes her decision as a spiritual one and has since meet with pro-life leaders and been seen praying with activists on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood has issued a restraining order against Abby Johnson apparently trying to silence her. The order claims that Planned Parenthood could be harmed by the disclosure of certain information known to Johnson, but it does not attempt to bar Johnson or members of the Coalition for Life from praying or demonstrating on the sidewalk near the clinic.
