Christian Influence in Society? Yes. A Theocracy? No.

Should followers of Jesus have a positive impact on every area of society?

Absolutely.

The light of our lives and the light of our message should illuminate our surroundings. Our good deeds and our biblically based values should disseminate love and truth. At the same time, we are not called to take over society and impose our faith on the nation.

There is a vast difference between making a positive impact and imposing a theocracy.

Of course, whatever we do together as followers of Jesus will likely be misjudged by our critics.

As a colleague pointed out in a group text discussion, “In the 1970s it was ‘culture religion’ or ‘civil religion’ that we were accused of. Then in the 1990s we were accused of being ‘theocrats.’ Then it was ‘dominionists’ (though I think most who accused us could not have properly defined the term . . . .). But behold! They have a NEW word for us now: ‘Christian Nationalism.’ And the purpose of this word? It is to bludgeon, bully, intimidate and keep us OUT of the public square. It is to shame us from being activists.”

That’s why, in the days ahead, we will hear dire warnings from the left about a nefarious plot by Christian conservatives to take over the nation. The warnings will be so shrill that they will border on hysteria. “They’re trying to impose a theocracy! They are trying to create an America in their own image! And they are not afraid to call for the shedding of blood!”

Unfortunately, there are some Christian groups calling for this very thing (although, to be clear, when they talk about the possibility of bloodshed, they mean that their blood might be shed as martyrs for the cause). They are espousing an unhealthy Christian nationalism that merges Christian identity with national identity and wraps the gospel in the American flag. And the most extreme among them would even welcome a theocratic kingdom on earth where religious leaders dictate how the society is governed.

Some are political leaders, some are media leaders, and some are ministry leaders. In all cases, I reject their goals, I reject their methods, and I reject their rhetoric. In fact, this is one reason why I have distanced myself from the term “Christian nationalism.” (For an in-depth treatment of this in my latest book, see here.)

To give some specific examples, some of the rhetoric at the DC Jericho March December 2020 was dangerous. Some of the rhetoric of GAB’s CEO Andrew Torba, referring explicitly to Christian nationalism, is dangerous. And when a major speaker at a recent MAGA rally calls on pastors to preach from the Constitution as much as from the Bible, we know things have gotten way off course.

That’s why I continue to distance myself from “Christian nationalism.” We can be Jesus loving patriots without embracing the “Christian nationalist” moniker.

At the same time, we must remember that every effort that we make to bring positive change to our communities will be labeled dominionism.

Every vote we cast will be seen as part of the alleged takeover plot.

Every step that we take to fulfill our calling as the salt of the earth and the light of the world will be branded as part of a theocracy. “You Christians are just trying to take over! Next you’ll be forcing us to read the Bible and go to church, under penalty of imprisonment or death!”

Maybe I’m exaggerating here, but only a little.

In fact, in the same text discussion I referenced above, another colleague pointed out that a left-leaning intellectual was now associating large families with Christian nationalism. To paraphrase (again, in somewhat exaggerated terms), “Beware those evil breeders! They’re probably hoarding weapons too. More babies and more guns! That’s their secret plan. A militia in every home!”

So, I recognize that our best intentions will be maligned. I understand that we will be misunderstood and, even worse, intentionally misrepresented. So be it.

But let’s not give our critics fuel for their fire by our foolish behavior and undisciplined rhetoric. And let’s not confuse the watching masses by playing into their worst fears.

We can be world changers without being world dominators. We can preach the Scriptures without advocating for a theocracy. We can vote and lobby and stand and speak without calling for Christian dominionism.

In short, we should do what Jesus told us to do: “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matt 5:16).

We should heed the exhortation of Peter: “Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world” (1 Peter 2:12, NLT).

We should carry out this mandate from Proverbs: “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8–9)

That is how we change the world.

Should God Save America?

It has been interesting to read what Christians would like God to do for America. I have read repeated prayer requests for God to spare the Country, and I heartily agree with the sentiment. But I am also aware, as I hope most Christians are, that God operates sovereignly and wisely to achieve His own eternal purposes. His plans may or may not coincide with ours.

It is, therefore, our primary responsibility, regardless of politics, culture, and consequences to bring ourselves to the place where God can bless us. An appropriate question might be, “what must American Christianity be so as to not hinder God’s preserving America should He delight to do so?”

We could turn to the sixth chapter of Isaiah to observe what might be considered one man’s “job interview” with God. Isaiah, who went on to be one of the greatest of Israel’s prophets, had a gripping encounter with God where He saw Him, Jehovah, in His exalted glory. The first thought of the prophet was his own sinful condition! “Woe is me,” he exclaimed, “for I am undone!”

Dramatically, an angel symbolically took a coal from the altar’s fire and “cleansed” the prophet of his sin. The next utterance came from God Himself: a call for someone to serve! Isaiah received that commission having brought himself into conformity to God’s will through repentance and true worship and was thus prepared for an illustrious career as a man used by God to call Israel back to God.

Which brings me to my point. I do not doubt the sincerity of Christians who desire to see God do a great work in saving America from the disaster looming on the horizon. But we must not think that God is bound to answer our prayers simply because we ask, or that He would be so inclined if we refuse to be humble before Him.

To begin with, it appears that much of American Christendom has a seriously flawed understanding of worship. The sloppy use of the word indicates that we need a reexamination of what it is that God considers worship. We speak of “worship teams,” “worship bands,” and “worship leaders,” as if worship is something that requires a leader and occurs only when we gather with these people in charge.

It may be that some worship occurs during these services, but it is often incidental to them, not rising out of them. And the insipid and carnal preaching and music often produced in these “worship” activities is not the problem but a symptom of the problem. I would suggest that many, if not most, of the so-called “worship leaders” do not themselves understand what worship is, so it is not surprising that those who follow do not understand either.

Let’s speak the truth: lost mankind has no desire to worship God. “Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:21, 22. Worshipping Him is no longer natural to the fallen image bearers of God and is rather offensive to us. For that reason, we create our own alternative forms of worship that, in the vanity of our minds, we imagine will fool God. Cain, in Genesis chapter four, was the first person to do so and was not at all pleased that God refused his faux worship.

Unfortunately, that early rejection by God of man’s substituted religion taught no one anything. History is largely the story of mans’ alternative religious theories butting up against other false religious theories, or against God’s genuine worship. It is not a pretty story.

God’s Chosen People, the Jews, were regularly rebuked by God’s prophets for replacing true worship with their own. At the very moment Moses was receiving the Law from God’s own finger on the top of Sinai the people at the foot of the mountain were creating a golden calf to worship. And a short time later, having received the instructions for offering incense in the Tabernacle, Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu offered “strange fire” and were slain by God for their offense.

Often, Satan’s substitute worship does not appear obviously contradictory to genuine worship. He is too smart for that. His worship methodologies may have all the earmarks of genuine worship: music, beauty, serenity, etc., but a close look will reveal that it is not God who is being worshipped. It should be noted that when Satan sought to tempt Christ into false worship, he used Scripture itself, words that had come out of Christ’s own mouth!

A pastor who wrote on this subject a few years ago commented that what he often witnessed in contemporary “worship” services was not “come worship with me,” but rather, “come, watch me worship!” Thus, worship of God has in some cases been perverted into a worship of the “worship leaders!” Serving God and worship is no “spectator sport!”

Have we forgotten also that the incense and anointing oils God prescribed, as beautifully fragrant as they were, were for sacred use only and were not to be duplicated for the worshippers’ personal pleasure? Yet, the primary argument contemporary Christians make for the “style” of music and “worship” they choose is that they like it!

How can we expect blessings from God in that? Have we forgotten the repeated examples in Scripture of God’s dealing with false or misdirected worship? Is it that difficult to distinguish true worship from its counterfeits? Only if we wish to be deceived!

Fundamental to genuine worship are these things: It is about God and not us. It brings us to an honest appraisal of our own sinfulness and unworthiness in the face of His holiness and perfections. It reminds us that He is good, and we are not, and that we owe Him eternally for every good thing we have ever experienced and will experience. It brings us to silence and submission. The true worshipper has no demands and no will of his own, period!

Tragically, this is not the situation in American Christianity. On every hand we witness a capitulation to the world, a hungering after what the culture idolizes, a complacency about sin, and a willingness to tell the lost what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. It is not surprising that the church, having lost its saltiness, is “tread under foot” by the world.

So, will God save America? You tell me! Are we Christians living in such a way that God can bless us in genuine revival? That is debatable! But we cannot discount His grace. He generally does far better for us than we deserve, and ultimately, He will do as He pleases for His own glory. Therefore we can rest in the knowledge that “all things work together for good to those who love God. . . .”  (Romans 8:28, NKJV)

Let us rejoice and trust in Him!

40 Days for Life: Praying for God’s Intervention

Sometimes the smallest gesture can make a huge difference in a person’s life. A welcoming smile, a phone call, or an encouraging note received at an opportune moment has the power to turn despair into hope. This fall, just one hour of prayer could make a life-changing, life-saving difference in not one but two lives.

If you’ve ever participated in a 40 Days for Life peaceful prayer campaign, you know what I mean. As men and women gather to pray outside of a Planned Parenthood clinic or other abortion mill, the truth of James 5:16 is manifested: the earnest prayers of the righteous followers of God are powerful and effective. And, while prayer is of the utmost importance, the value of the physical presence of prayer warriors cannot be overstated.

Over and over again, we’ve heard women recount how their hearts softened and their minds were changed as they witnessed 40 Days for Life participants praying for them and for their unborn babies. Many women have admitted that, though they had decided to have their babies aborted, they had also decided that if one person acknowledged them, smiled at them, or spoke kindly to them, they wouldn’t go through with it.

Will you allow God to use you?

Your peaceful, prayerful presence communicates the message that every life is fearfully and wonderfully made and bears the image of his or her Creator, the Holy God of the Universe. Women facing a crisis pregnancy need to know that the lives they are carrying are precious to our gracious and merciful Lord — and to us. God loves and cares for each mother and her baby. These mothers also need to see that the people of God love and care for them in the midst of their pregnancies and beyond.

This year’s 40 Days for Life campaign begins on Wednesday, September 28 and runs through Sunday, November 6. In order to cover the approximately 960-hour duration of the campaign, many prayer warriors are needed. Families, Bible study small groups, Sunday school classes, choir members, college students, co-workers, and others have traditionally come together for an hour of prayer every week at a nearby Planned Parenthood center. What a blessing it would be if you and your praying family and friends would join with thousands of pro-life supporters this fall as we earnestly pray that unborn life would be valued and preserved, and abortion would be abolished!

Take ACTION: Please visit 40daysforlife.com for more information and to sign up for a location and prayer time. One hour a week over 6 weeks could change a life–just one hour a week spent being a silent witness in loving, prayerful support of two lives. This relatively small commitment could be the most important hour you’ll spend in prayer this year.

Our friend Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, Pastor Emeritus of Moody Church, recorded a short video exhortation for IFI readers to encourage Christians to use the power of God in prayer against abortion and for the sanctity of life. Listen to his wisdom and advice:

Join us in partnering with 40 Days For Life and, we hope that with God’s people petitioning heaven, we will see the beginning of the end of abortion in America!

Must Christians Obey Bad Court Rulings?

We’ve heard that the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is threatening democracy. For example, the recent Dobbs decision broke democracy – or affirmed it, depending on your point of view.

It turns out that the Court can easily break American democracy, if it’s inclined to. All that need happen is for some justices to stop acting like jurists, and start acting like they took bribes. This article explores:

  • The Dobbs decision and democracy
  • Why activists need the Court to respond to polls
  • How justices can treat the U.S. Constitution like rubber, stretching it at need
  • Why an activist court will ruin democracy
  • How Christians might resist bad U.S. Supreme Court rulings

What is American democracy?

Whether at national or local levels, America has a republican system of government. Voters select a representative to do the actual lawmaking. That representative isn’t a mere puppet, but is free to act on his or her own conscience.

Having government by representatives, America isn’t a democracy – at least not as it is traditionally defined. In an actual democracy the populace directly votes on all of the legislation. But in our republic we only directly vote for representatives, bond issues, and the occasional referendum. We’ve used “democracy” and “republic” interchangeably for so long that many people think that all that is needed to create a law is to wave a Gallup poll in the direction of the capitol building.

Because of this common use of “democracy,” this article will also describe our form of government as a democracy.

The Dobbs abortion decision does not threaten American democracy

There is much public angst about the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion, called Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The dispute started when Mississippi passed a law saying that a baby, one who was at least 15 weeks past conception, could not be legally aborted. This law was challenged by an abortion provider. The issue reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the Mississippi law.

In its ruling, the Court also revoked the Roe v Wade decision. It could have both affirmed the Mississippi law and kept Roe, but it didn’t go that route. The result is that state legislatures can pass their own laws concerning abortion.

It’s said that this is the end of the world, that the Court is taking away our democracy. According to Jill Filipovic, writing for the Guardian, it’s anti-democratic to allow democratically elected state officials to pass laws about abortion. In her words:

Because, with this ruling, the supreme court has just signaled its illegitimacy – and it throws much of the American project into question. … And now, this court, stacked with far-right judges appointed via ignoble means, has stripped from American women the right to control our own bodies.

What the U.S. Supreme Court actually did was insist that a right to abortion must rest not on judges’ whims, but instead on laws passed by legislatures. So the Dobbs decision affirms the democratic process, and its opponents are talking through their hats.

The SCOTUS is still looking to the U.S. Constitution, and not to the polls

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan thinks that the Court must make its judgments with one eye on public opinion polls. She said:

I’m not talking about any particular decision or even any particular series of decisions, but if over time the court loses all connection with the public and with public sentiment, that’s a dangerous thing for a democracy.

Justice Kagan’s statement is loaded with problems. Regarding “public sentiment,” which public should be considered? And why should a survey of the general public hold more weight than the words of the U.S. Constitution? Do survey companies limit their polls only to known constitutional scholars?

For example, a recent Reuters poll headline said that Democrats hate the Dobbs decision. Does that mean that the Dobbs decision is a travesty? Note that this same Reuters poll also says that Republicans love the decision just as strongly as the Democrats hate it. Does that mean that the decision is actually a resounding bit of wisdom?

The phrase “the supreme court has just signaled its illegitimacy” reveals the hidden agenda. Says Jonathan Turley:

So why is Roberts’ 60% approval rating so crushing for democracy? Because, Levitz explained, “If the Court’s right-wing majority finds that it can continually push the boundaries of conservative judicial activism without undermining its own popular legitimacy, then the consequences for progressivism and popular democracy could be dire.”

Unpack that line for a second.

First, Levitz is saying that the goals of the left would be scuttled if the court or its members are popular. For over a year, many in the media and U.S. Congress have launched unrelenting attacks on the court and pushed an agenda to pack the court to create an instant liberal majority. They know that court-packing is widely detested by the public (as it once was by President Biden and many on the left). In order to achieve such a goal, the justices must be demonized like much else in our age of rage. But it is not working if 60% of the public actually like the chief justice.

It is also worth noting that the stated goal is “popular democracy.” The term is often associated with “direct democracy,” where citizens have unfiltered and direct say in government decisions. It was the model expressly rejected by the Framers in favor of our system of representative democracy.

You can construct a poll to get whatever result you want. Forcing judges to follow public poll results would endanger the republic, catering to the loudest screamers of the majority. “Justice by polling” doesn’t describe a society, but rather mob rule.

We’re fortunate that, for now, our U.S. Supreme Court decides cases by looking to the U.S. Constitution, and not to the pollsters. If the Court abandoned written standards, and instead judged by selecting their favorite constituency, it would become a court of injustice (Leviticus 19:15).

Why this push to make the courts follow the polls?

Americans are bombarded with “the sky is falling” claims, that unless we change our ways we’re all doomed. My versions of these claims aren’t reverent, but at least are truthful.

  • Critical Race Theory: America is racist beyond redemption, and the only remedy is a complete overthrow of American culture, including its Christian beliefs. Unelected anti-racist scolds, serving as “thought police”, will have authority to veto or prevent anything they don’t like, whether public or private. And “white” people, who comprise 70% of all voters, will love being called “irredeemably racist.” An irresistible combination, for sure!
  • Great Reset: Because of a crisis which has suddenly befallen us, the whole world must waste no time, and join together in a one-world government. Just because we spent decades formulating our solution doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant for … whatever this crisis happens to be. But hey, you’ll own nothing and like it!
  • Climate change: The world, and all civilization, will die unless we do something now! And this time it’s for real. Not like in 2009 when we only had 50 days to save the world. Not like in 1989 when we had 10 years. And not like in the 1970s when we were all to die from global cooling. Our salvation will certainly be found through increased taxes and forming a socialist dictatorship.

Notice how the solutions always lead to authoritarian socialist government? That’s because these activists are socialists at heart. They’re true believers, and think that socialism will bring America into a heaven on earth. But socialism is dishonest on purpose. Why, then, should we believe them when they promise to solve all of our problems?

Since Americans aren’t buying what they’re selling, how can activists achieve their goals? By cheating the system, getting legal and bureaucratic changes without voter assent. They’ll game the courts, flooding the SCOTUS with fellow activists, justices who believe in a “living constitution,” who will judge by politics and not by law.

A living constitution is no constitution at all

When a case comes before the U.S. Supreme Court, it’s because it involves constitutional concerns. No matter what the case, the justices ought compare its issues with what the U.S. Constitution actually says, and with previous opinions issued by justices. There are two competing philosophies of constitutional interpretation, one of which plays loose with the U.S. Constitution’s words.

Originalism says that the U.S. Constitution must be interpreted according to concepts and meanings in use when the U.S. Constitution was written. The National Constitution Center says this about originalism:

Originalism is a theory of the interpretation of legal texts, including the text of the Constitution. Originalists believe that the constitutional text ought to be given the original public meaning that it would have had at the time that it became law. The original meaning of constitutional texts can be discerned from dictionaries, grammar books, and from other legal documents from which the text might be borrowed. It can also be inferred from the background legal events and public debate that gave rise to a constitutional provision. The original meaning of a constitutional text is an objective legal construct like the reasonable man standard in tort law, which judges a person’s actions based on whether an ordinary person would consider them reasonable, given the situation. It exists independently of the subjective “intentions” of those who wrote the text or of the “original expected applications” that the Framers of a constitutional text thought that it would have.

Living constitution says that the U.S. Constitution can be interpreted according to current political needs. The National Constitution Center says this:

Living constitutionalists believe that the meaning of the constitutional text changes over time, as social attitudes change, even without the adoption of a formal constitutional amendment pursuant to Article V of the Constitution. Living constitutionalists believe that racial segregation was constitutional from 1877 to 1954, because public opinion favored it, and that it became unconstitutional only as a result of the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) – a case in which they think the Supreme Court changed and improved the Constitution. In contrast, originalists think that the Fourteenth Amendment always forbade racial segregation—from its adoption in 1868, to the Supreme Court’s erroneous decision upholding segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), to the decision in Brown in 1954, down to the present day. Living constitutionalists think racial apartheid could become constitutional again if social attitudes toward race evolve. Originalists disagree and think race discrimination will always be unconstitutional unless the Fourteenth Amendment is repealed.

Woodrow Wilson was an early advocate of a malleableU.S. Constitution, saying:

All that progressives ask or desire is permission – in an era when “development,” “evolution,” is the scientific word – to interpret the Constitution according to the Darwinian principle…

“Hate speech” is an example of twisting what the U.S. Constitution says. The Court recently ruled that even burning a cross, KKK style, constitutes protected speech (R.A.V. v. City of St. Paul). Yet people are being punished by government officials for “misgendering,” or using a “wrong pronoun.” Maybe you’ll soon be prosecuted for doing Christian evangelism.

The U.S. Constitution defines the duties and bounds of our federal government. As the Ninth and Tenth Amendment say, if it isn’t in here then the Federal government can’t do it. But if the U.S. Constitution is as malleable as the living constitution people think it is, then those bounds can be stretched to the ends of the earth. A Darwinian interpretation of the U.S. Constitution enables the most ravenous of governments, and is unable to prevent government excesses.

An activist Supreme Court destroys American democracy

We concluded that the Dobbs decision didn’t threaten American democracy. Rather, it affirmed it, because it put the issues into the elected state legislatures. A corollary statement is that Roe was anti-democratic, because it blocked legislatures from acting on abortion.

If our society wants something to be legal, and recognized as constitutional, then political pressure will arise to achieve that end. But judicial activism destroys American democracy because it imposes changes that a consensus of society doesn’t want, and didn’t pass into law.

The Obergefell v Hodges SCOTUS decision, legalizing same-sex marriage, is an example of how the Court destroys democracy. Consider:

  • Our American culture gets its beliefs and practices from European expressions of Christianity.
  • Our law comes from this culture, but specifically English common law.
  • In this culture and law, marriage is a union of one man and one woman. Deviations from this, such as polygamy, have been shunned and prosecuted.
  • The Constitution, and the Fourteenth Amendment, were written in this context. There was no need to define what marriage was, except for those bans on polygamy.

Mr. Obergefell, and his lawyers, pleaded to the U.S. Supreme Court that marriage should be redefined, to permit man-and-man unions. Here is how they phrased their case.

According to Lyle Denniston of SCOTUSBlog,

“the couples are not seeking…a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, or, in other words, a new right created especially for same-sex couples, never before recognized in American constitutional history. What they are seeking, they stress, is an equal right to enter the long-standing institution of marriage, with access to that institution being a ‘fundamental right.’ This simple emphasis on equality of access to an existing right is intended, in the briefs, to support both a right to equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment and inclusion in the existing marriage right as a matter of ‘due process’ under that same amendment. And, in that sense, this argument is an invitation to the Court not to see what is at issue as a bold plea to fashion a new right out of whole cloth — one of the main arguments made against same-sex marriage.”

As a man, Mr. Obergefell already had a “fundamental right” to enter into a marriage with a woman. But he, and his lawyers, convinced the U.S. Supreme Court to impose on us all a legal invention.

By redefining words, an activist U.S. Supreme Court changed the meaning of all laws regarding marriage. Like the tail wagging the dog, they think America will change its culture and beliefs to match. For their next act, perhaps they’ll impose on us a new definition for sin.

Continuing judicial activism could push America to armed conflict

It’s said that a society’s laws are the codified version of its values. How, then, to categorize laws imposed by activists? The values that those imposed laws assert are foreign to the culture. However, if such laws are imposed often enough, or are severe enough, then society starts pushing back.

If people realize that they’re losing things they really care about, then pushback can evolve into armed resistance. This is how the Spanish Civil War came about.

  • The socialists, when in control of the government, wanted to radically change Spain. They passed laws to confiscate property, and to remove the Catholic Church from its place in society.
  • Property owners, the Church, and much of the public didn’t like these moves. They saw what the communists did to Russia, and feared revolution in Spain.
  • When an opportunity came to use the Army to thwart the socialists, it was welcomed by the anti-socialists. They thought that war was preferable to what the socialists would bring.
  • Fighting in Spain continued for years, and exhausted the country.

Can America become as polarized as Spain was? It seems unlikely that America will erupt in civil strife, but it also seemed unlikely that we’d have activist courts reworking the U.S. Constitution. A society goes to war with itself only when pushed. Even then, the transition from passivity to active resistance requires a spark, some particular circumstance.

If concerted fighting ever starts, then it will likely be costly and hard to end. In America everything is interconnected – electricity lines, pipelines, food transportation from rural to urban areas. Any sort of struggle would interrupt or destroy these pathways, bringing grief to millions. And it wouldn’t be a repeat of the American Civil War, with state against state. The people wanting to change our culture are all over the place, maybe even your neighbors. Animosity could get very personal, very quickly.

The Bible sometimes permits Christians to oppose, with armed might, their evil officials

Resisting your foes can be costly and painful. Yet each of us already has something he or she would fight for, risking life and limb to preserve. Perhaps saving from a fire the lives of your spouse and children? Stopping the blatant theft of your house and life savings? How about fighting to preserve your freedom to worship, and to express your Christianity through your work and life?

For the sake of freedom of religion, there were times where whole Christian communities went to war against their own kings.

  • In 1550, Charles V, emperor over Germany, demanded that the Lutherans in Magdeburg give up belief in “salvation by grace.” Resist, and they’d be imprisoned or killed.
  • In 1637, Charles, king over England and Scotland, demanded that the Scots worship God only in the Anglican way, conforming to the official church of England. Rather then change their Presbyterian beliefs, the Scots formed armies and fought against the king.

These stories, and why Christians believed that armed resistance was justified, are recounted in exhaustive detail in my article American Christians, Tyranny, and Resistance. Here is a summary of the argument for resistance, taken from the Magdeburg Confession.

First, Christians need not always obey every command of their officials. Quoting the Confession:

. . just as subjects necessarily owe obedience to their magistrates; and children and the rest of the family, to their parents and masters, on account of God; so on the other hand, when magistrates or parents themselves lead their charges away from true piety and uprightness, obedience is not owed to them from the Word of God. Also, when they professedly persecute piety and uprightness, they remove themselves from the honor of magistrate and parents before God and their own consciences, and instead of being an ordinance of God they become an ordinance of the devil, which can and ought to be resisted by His order for the sake of one’s calling.

Second, the Magdeburg pastors believed that Romans 13 required that the government must proactively do good, and never evil.

Authority is an ordinance of God to honor what is good and to punish what is evil (Romans 13:3). Accordingly, if authority presumes to persecute what is good and promote what is evil, then it is no longer an ordinance of God but an ordinance of the Devil, and whoever resists such evil is not resisting God’s ordinance but the ordinance of the Devil.

Third, Christians have always had the option of civil disobedience, with martyrdom being its possible consequence. So where did resisting evil commands by force come from? From the concept of the “lesser magistrate.”

It is when tyrants begin to be so mad that they persecute with guile and arms, not so much the just persons of inferior magistrates and their subjects, as the right itself, especially the right of anyone of the highest and most necessary rank; and that they persecute God, the author of right in persons. . . . and if he himself defends and prosecutes this law with force and arms, so that certain death is laid down as the penalty of those who resist or fail to conform – in such a case, doubtless, no clear-thinking person would have any hesitation about the divine right and commandment that such a leader or monarch ought to be curbed by everyone in his most wicked attempt, even by the lowest magistrates with whatever power they have.

Fourth, this means that when officials of the “greater magistrate,” such as those of the federal government, pass evil laws or regulations, then officials of the “lesser magistrates,” such as those of our state, county, and city governments, should step up and shield their communities from those evils. Even ordinary citizens, those who aren’t officials, have a duty.

It is obvious that no pious or Christian person can bring aid to our enemies either by military means, or by giving plans, money or other things by which our enemies are armed. . . . Therefore, whether you be a magistrate or a subject in any way involved in this war or in the carrying out of proscription, consider to what you are lending your counsel, money, work, body, and even your very life and soul; and to what allies. Is it not to the enemies of Christ and His word?

What is worth fighting for?

The authorities will likely never command something so blatant as “don’t obey or worship God.” But they do seem to be good at commanding small offenses, each one taking a bite from our religious freedoms. As examples:

  • Forcing someone, over his own religious objections, to bake a cake glorifying homosexuality.
  • School officials hiding from parents that they hire “drag queens” to school to meet, and indoctrinate, students as young as 6 years old.

When your “this has gone too far” moment arrives, I’m sure that you’ll recognize a need to resist evil. Here a couple of issues which I think you’ll also find outrageous, and worth fighting about.

Government steals your children, and the rights to raise them. An ongoing theme for socialists is abolishing the family. This thought is still evident today.

Today, the main backwards role the family plays is the oppression of children, who are subjected to a tyranny of the parents and denied the basic rights which should belong to every human, most importantly the right of free development of the personality.

Their smallest proposals would make parents mere babysitters. Their worst proposals abolish parenting altogether. Says advocate Joe Mathews: “My solution — making raising your own children illegal…” The sentiment among activists is obviously there. Why else would the Virginia governor say “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

You can read more about this in my article They are Your children, not the State’s! That article was written to encourage parents to monitor their children’s education, and make positive changes about it. But it’s also a warning that you could lose your own children.

You’ve already sweated and slaved, and stayed up long nights, to care for your children, and teach them the difference between right and wrong. You’d fight to keep your children out of the hands of kidnappers and molesters. Would you also fight to keep them out of the hands of government ne’er do wells?

Government steals all of your wealth. We seem to be in an age of envy, and think that taxing “a little slice from the tippy top” of rich people wouldn’t hurt anybody. From this comes a “wealth tax,” where people have to pay the government for the privilege of owning a house, a car, jewelry, and even having money in the bank. Such a tax would be a permanent hole in everybody’s wallet, and over a short period of time render you penniless. Then, lucky you, you’re now a ward of the state (Genesis 47:18-21).

You can read more about this in my article Wealth Tax: the envious enabler of American Socialism. For example, a 2% annual wealth tax would tax away 50% of your wealth in just 30 years. That doesn’t include secondary effects, such as needing to sell off the rest of your holdings just to get the cash to pay your taxes. Over time, the government gets all the wealth and everybody else becomes dependent on the government. Doesn’t it remind you of “… to each according to his needs” of the socialist pledge?

Is it worth something to you to not be a penniless slave to the government? Remember, when they’re providing your food they control your behavior. Or don’t you know of “social credit” in China, and which is seemingly coming here?

Conclusions

The SCOTUS ought to uphold the U.S. Constitution as written (originalism). Instead we have justices who are willing to invent rights. There is also pressure to add many such activist justices, to break our constitutional protections right away and implement things that society doesn’t want.

An activist U.S. Supreme Court could lead America into places that, in other countries, led to civil war. It leads to war because the activists are aggressively pushy, and society pushes back. The best thing for us is for officials, judges, and activists defer to the electorate. Convince the voters of the desired changes. Doing anything else looks like a coup, and won’t be received well.

What is the Church Teaching?

What do you expect from your church? Biblical preaching? A community where biblical values are exemplified by clergy and laity alike? A recent poll from George Barna’s Cultural Research Center (CRC) indicates that these are no longer reasonable expectations in American churches.

The CRC poll surveyed 1000 pastors from a variety of ecclesial traditions (Evangelical Protestant, Mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, Black Protestant, etc.), asking them to evaluate 54 worldview-related statements such as “Having faith matters more than which faith you have;” or “the Bible is ambiguous regarding abortion; it is possible to make a compelling biblical argument either for or against abortion.” On the basis of their responses, it would appear that a mere 37 percent of Christian pastors in the U.S. possess a biblical worldview.

Among evangelical pastors, a biblical worldview was somewhat more common, but the numbers are hardly encouraging: only 51% percent of pastors in traditionally conservative denominations (Southern Baptist Convention, Presbyterian Church in America, Evangelical Free Church of America, Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, etc.) met the standards for a biblical worldview.

The American Church, it seems, has fallen from its calling to be “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15). This begs the question, what is the Church teaching? If America’s pastors don’t have a biblical worldview, what kind of worldview is being propagated in America’s churches? The CRC poll’s results indicate that 62 percent of American pastors have a syncretistic worldview—a hodge-podge of biblical theism and whatever secular ideology was in vogue last Tuesday. One-third or more of senior pastors surveyed affirmed the statements “socialism is better than capitalism” and “sexual relations between two unmarried people who believe they love each other is morally acceptable.”

The problem, however, doesn’t just lie with America’s clergy. The results of the CRC’s poll implicate the laity as well. As St. Paul says, “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). America’s churchgoers, it would seem, have lost their taste for sound doctrine and would much rather have their itching ears tickled with pleasant words—words that won’t require them to stop sleeping around; words that won’t tell them to stop voting for pro-abortion candidates just because they were promised student loan forgiveness.

As bleak as the situation would appear to be, the solution is wonderfully simple: find a church that preaches the Word of God. Find a church that reads and/or exhorts passages of Scripture every Sunday. Find a church that isn’t afraid of taking on the cultural issues of the day and understand that the Bible is profitable “for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Find a church that administers the sacraments in accordance with God’s Word. Find a church where the only new words you’re worried about your kids learning are words like “justification” and “eschatology.”

Moreover, if a faithful, Bible-believing church doesn’t exist in your community, is it too much to pull up stakes and move somewhere there is such a church? Or how about starting a new church? We are commanded to “test all things and hold fast to what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21) and if your church can’t be trusted to show you and your family how to do that, it’s high time you found another church. And above all, every one of us ought to be praying that God would raise up men in our nation who, like St. Paul, can say “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ…” (1 Cor. 11:1).

Does the Bible Mandate Nice Language When Condemning Evil?

While their sanctimonious and empty proclamations of fealty to inclusivity, love, tolerance, unity, autonomy, freedom, and diversity echo systemically throughout American institutions, leftists reveal their inky underbellies rotted with hypocrisy and depravity when they screech hater and hurl death wishes at Christians who dare to disagree boldly with critical race theory or evil ideas related to sexuality.

But it’s not just leftists, secularists, and atheists who faux-tie their panties in a twist about bold language from Christians. Even many conservatives get the heebie-jeebies if Christians use bold language. And some of those conservatives are Christians themselves.

Every Christian on the frontlines of the culture war has experienced the voluntary social distancing of brothers and sisters in Christ who don’t want to be tainted by friendship with cultural lepers. We all know the experience of having friends or colleagues either secretly whisper their thanks for our work, or avoid us entirely, or turn against us. There’s no skin in the game for many Christians when the game gets rough. Instead of marching into battle accoutered with the armor of God, they scuttle into their safe havens accoutered with protective platitudes acceptable to God’s enemies.

All those legions of “winsome” Christians holed up in their bunkers hoping no unbelieving colleague learns they disapprove of homosexuality get the vapors if a brother or sister in Christ calls a pro-choicer a child-sacrifice celebrant or a homosexual teacher who ideologically grooms kindergartners a pervert.

A couple of years ago, I wrote an article about the superintendent of a large Illinois high school district who sexually integrated all locker rooms in the five-school district—a decision so wicked that all Christians should have felt enraged.

He was aided and abetted by wealthy Hollywood Matrix director “Lana” Wachowski—a man who pretends to be a woman—homosexuals from outside the district, and a school board member with a vile sexuality podcast for children. In strong language, I wrote about this evil action and the vipers who promoted it.

In response, I received an email from a conservative Christian who identified herself as the “dean of rhetoric” in a “Christian co-school.” She chastised my “language and tone,” saying that she found them “disturbing.” She criticized the “vitriol and loaded language … name calling and hyperbole” and “uncharitable language,” saying it “would never be tolerated” in her rhetoric classes, that she was “disappointed to read” such language, and that she found my “writing style offensive.”

So, a Christian is teaching children that the use of biblical language and tone is sinful even when describing egregious sin.

I asked if she had ever sent an email with as much passion and strong language as the one she sent to me to any of the many political leaders, public school teachers, administrators, or heretical “Christian” leaders who promote sexual deviance to children. No response.

“Much of what “progressives” affirm as good and true seems to be sexual desires that originate in their dark bellies—or what in The Abolition of ManC.S. Lewis calls the seat of mere animal appetites.

Lewis argues that to protect against domination by our imperious appetites, human emotions must be properly trained:

Without the aid of trained emotions, the intellect is powerless against the animal organism…. The little human animal will not at first have the right responses. It must be trained to feel pleasure, liking, disgust, and hatred at those things which really are pleasant, likeable, disgusting and hateful.

How do Christians who favor warm milquetoasty language at all times intend to train human animals of all sizes to feel disgust and hatred of those things which really are disgusting and hateful while using only warm milquetoasty language?

Lewis continues, describing what education should do:

Until quite modern times all teachers and even all men believed the universe to be such that certain emotional reactions on our part could be either congruous or incongruous to it—believed, in fact, that objects did not merely receive, but could merit, our approval or disapproval, our reverence or our contempt. … Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he ought.

Yes, there are things—desires, ideas, images, words, and acts—for which we should properly feel hatred. The prophet Amos said, “Hate evil, and love good.” In Romans, Paul teaches us “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” For love to be genuine or true, we must abhor what is evil.

Children must be taught to feel love for the good and feel hatred for that which is evil, which is wholly different from hating people. True love requires first knowing what is true and good. Affirming in and to people that which God detests is not love; affirming in and to people that which God detests is detestable.

“Progressives” understand that the emotions must be trained, which is why they use the arts—especially our myth-making machine—Hollywood—and public schools to shape the hearts of America’s children. Tragically, since “progressives” don’t know truth, they’re training America’s children to love evil and hate good.

In our public schools, in our interactions with friends, and in our Facebook posts, we have at our disposal many tools for training emotions, among which are rhetorical tools. The Bible warns that the tongue “is a restless evil, full of deadly poison,” and that “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” But such verses do not and cannot possibly mean Christians must never use strong language or sarcasm. We know that because the Bible includes numerous examples of the use of strong language and mockery.

Amos called women fat “cows” and warned that God would take them away by harpoons or fishhooks. Imagine how today’s evanjellyfishes would feel if a Christian were to use that biblical language.

Paul wrote this to Titus: “As one of their own prophets has said, ‘Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.’ This testimony is true.” In other words, Paul called Cretans liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons.

Jesus said,

“You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! … You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.”

“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?”

Paul said this about sinners,

“There is none who does good, no, not one.”

“Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive;”
“The venom of asps is under their lips”

In Revelation, those who are not saved are called “dogs.”

Peter describes false teachers—of which we have many in the church today—as “irrational animals … born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant. … They are blots and blemishes. … Accursed children!”

Paul calls the Galatians, “foolish Galatians.”

John the Baptist called the multitudes a “brood of vipers.”

If the dean of rhetoric of the Christian co-school thinks calling a top school leader who sexually integrates the locker rooms of 12,000 minor children “depraved,” undermines our witness—as she claimed I did—then logically she must think John the Baptist undermined his witness by calling the multitudes a brood of vipers.

American philosopher and Catholic, Dr. Edward Feser, holds in disdain the unbiblical and unhelpful contemporary perversion of the Christian obligation to love our neighbors:

Niceness. Well, it has its place. But the Christ who angrily overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, who taught a moral code more austere than that of the Pharisees, and who threatened unrepentant sinners with the fiery furnace, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, was not exactly “nice.”

Feser finds fault with the unbiblical notion that “even a great many churchmen seem to have bought into,” which is that “inoffensive ‘niceness’ is somehow the essence of the true Christian, or at least of any Christian worthy of the liberal’s respect.” He argues that in “innumerable vapid sermons one hears about God’s love and acceptance and forgiveness, but never about divine judgment or the moral teachings to which modern people are most resistant—and which, precisely for that reason, they most need to hear expounded and defended.”

Feser argues against church “teachings on sexual morality” that are delivered “half-apologetically, in vague and soft language, and in a manner hedged with endless qualifications”:

Such “niceness” is in no way a part of Christian morality. It is a distortion of the virtues of meekness (which is simply moderation in anger—as opposed to too much or too little anger), and friendliness (which is a matter of exhibiting the right degree of affability necessary for decent social order—as opposed to too little affability or too much).

The Bible does not mandate the kind of “nice,” saccharine language that corrupts the church in America, nor does it prohibit bold, bracing, condemnatory language from which many Christians flee. There is, however, someone who rejoices that so many Christians believe it does.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole million man’s soul and faith

So, if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste.

Maybe, just maybe, if every theologically orthodox Christian spoke in biblical tones and language about the perversity and corruption that confront our children every day in their TV shows, picture books, and government schools, and that defile our society, there would be less of it.

“Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21, 22).

Yet, the primary argument contemporary Christians make for the “style” of worship service they choose is that they like it! Have we forgotten the repeated examples in Scripture of God’s dealing with false or misdirected worship?  Is it that difficult to distinguish true worship from its counterfeits? Only if we wish to be deceived!

Fundamental to genuine worship are these things:

  • It is about God and not us.
  • It brings us to an honest appraisal of our own sinfulness and unworthiness in the face of His holiness and perfections.
  • It reminds us that He is good, and we are not, and that we owe Him eternally for every good thing we have ever experienced and will experience.
  • It brings us to silence and submission.

Therefore we can rest in the knowledge that “all things work together for good to those who love God. . . .”  (Romans 8:28)

Let us rejoice and trust in Him!

IFI Prayer Team: Lord Have Mercy on Illinois

Labor Day is approaching, and summer will soon give way to autumn. Many of us look forward to the change of seasons, watching the leaves change color, breathing in the crisp morning air, and picking apples with our kids or grandkids.

We surmise too that many, like the IFI staff, look forward to a strong pendulum swing in the election on November 8th. Political pundits admit that their predictions of the overall outcome are imprecise this far out. We know that over the next two months attitudes and interest levels could change. For those reasons, there is no doubt that Christians should be praying fervently for God’s mercy on our state and nation now and through the election, especially for God-fearing, pro-life candidates to prevail.

The national sin of abortion is front-and-center once again. While we praise God for the Dobbs decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, striking down the federal so-called “right to abortion,” we see the enemies of life working diligently to open new abortuaries in blue states as close as possible to red states with significant restrictions and/or abortion bans in order to “serve” the surge of patients already traveling across state borders to terminate the lives of unborn babies.

For example, CHOICES, based in Memphis, Tennessee, is opening a clinic in the college town of Carbondale. On the Wisconsin-Illinois Border, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is teaming up with Planned Parenthood of Illinois for an abortion mill in Waukegan. And according to a July 11th article by MyStateLine.com, a death clinic is in the works for Rockford.

These three facilities are in addition to the recently established clinics in Fairview Heights, Flossmoor, and Skokie, which have opened up over the past 5-6 years.

Nationally, we see a similar trend. Red River Women’s Clinic, which was North Dakota’s sole abortion clinic, is planning to relocate across the river to Minnesota. Planned Parenthood is working to open a new clinic in Ontario, Oregon, to serve the women expected to leave neighboring Idaho in search of abortions. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Mississippi clinic at the center of the Dobbs case overturning Roe v. Wade, is moving to Las Cruces, New Mexico just 20 minutes from the Texas border.

Our prayers must include an acknowledgement of the wickedness of innocent blood being shed in our state/nation and an earnest appeal for God’s forgiveness and mercy. We need to pray for women in crisis pregnancies and for sidewalk counselors and prayer warriors who stand vigil in front of these facilities. May their faithful witness turn hearts away from death to the Author of abundant life! (John 10:10)

We must recognize that prayer is where we start. We must lend our voice and actions to the pro-life goal of turning Illinois into a state that values human life at all stages of development. We must pray that God would soften the hearts of our friends, neighbors and family members while we work to lovingly persuade those same people with the truth of what abortion is and does. We all must engage in educating, equipping and exhorting the culture around us. We must shine the light of truth to those who hear only the lies of Big Abortion, Inc. and their allies in the media.

God is infuriated with the shedding of innocent blood (Psalm 106:38; Proverbs 6:16-17) and the apathy of so many Christians who remain on the sidelines in the face of evil (Ezekiel 12:2; James 1:22-25). Make no mistake, He sees what is going on in Illinois. But God gives us insight into why it appears He may have overlooked this grave evil.

The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. ~2 Peter 3:9

God wants us to repent, and He is sovereign. He wants to work through us to change everything–even the hearts of those who work inside these clinics. Let’s not forget that God specializes in hard cases. (Jeremiah 32:37; Luke 1:37; Ephesians 3:20; Luke 18:27)

We are to pray for one another too (Ephesians 6:18; James 5:16), because we tend to grow weary and discouraged. Therefore, we should be praying for the strength and resolve of those who are on the frontlines of this battle as we also pray that God would remove all fear and timidity from Christians who have not yet engaged in the battle for truth, righteousness, and the sanctity of human life.

Here are some additional prayers to lift up before our holy God through the name of Jesus over the next several weeks:

Thank God

  • Praise the Son of the Living God, our Creator and our Guide. Praise Him for His great faithfulness, day in and day out. Praise Him for encouraging us to approach Him in prayer and for being our Helper. Thank Him for being Jehovah Jireh, the One who provides for all our needs. We serve and worship the King of kings, and Lord of lords, Jesus, the Name above all names.
  • Praise and thank our holy and righteous God for the religious and civil freedoms that we still enjoy today in the United States. Pray that future generations uphold these freedoms and defend them. (Luke12:42-48)
  • Thank God for His countless blessings in our lives, families, communities, and nation. Thank Him for the trials and challenges that draw us closer to Him. Thank God for the patience, strength, and faith to wait out the storm. (Psalm 92:1-2)
  • PRAY for revival. (Psalm 85:6; John 8:32; James 5:16)

Please Pray:

  • That God will open the eyes of policymakers and candidates running for office to the sanctity of life. Pray that they will become defenders of innocent human life and not enablers of sexual immorality and death.
  • That in the 2022 election season, pro-life candidates will have the time, energy, and funding needed to saturate their districts with their campaign messages and materials.
  • That God will work in the hearts and minds of our state lawmakers and governor and that He will draw them to Him and His truth. (Proverbs 21:1-8)
  • That efforts to indoctrinate children in government schools will fail and that local school boards will reject the left-wing agenda for their students in kindergarten through 12th grade that include false and destructive critical race theory, sex-education, and LGBTQ advocacy.
  • That God will stir up Christian parents, grandparents, and church leaders about exiting public schools and to instead consider what they can do to pass on the Christian faith through discipleship and biblical character training.

Pray for the Sanctity of Life:

  • Lift up all pregnancy resource centers and those diligently reaching out to vulnerable mothers who feel as if abortion is their only option. Please pray for God’s hand of protection on those who work at these ministries and that any planned attacks would be thwarted.
  • Pray for a cultural awakening about abortion. Scripture teaches us that the image of God dwells equally in all people [Gen. 9:6], yet far too many in our culture believe that killing pre-born human beings is a legitimate choice. Many so-called “progressives” advocate for this under the banner of “reproductive rights” for women. Yet these narratives deny God’s truth about the sanctity of life and when it begins.
  • Please pray for God’s forgiveness for our culture’s wickedness and complicity in the destruction of human life. Though God commands, “You Shall Not Murder,” we have instead legalized it and subsidized it with our tax dollars and have failed to treat all human life as sacred to the Lord. We deserve God’s judgment, but please cry out to God for his MERCY on our state and nation. Thankfully, God’s mercies are new every day. (Lamentations 3:22-23)
  • Pray for a softening of hearts and minds. May God give us opportunities to minister to those who are hurting and may our conversations be filled with His grace and love.
  • Pray that the church steps up to teach and defend God’s truth regarding the sanctity of life. We are already seeing an increase in abortion traffic into our state as people come to abortion facilities in Illinois. The opportunities to be salt and light at prayer vigils, as sidewalk counselors, as friends and neighbors, are increasing. Pray that we recognize these opportunities and ask God to work through us to help would-be mothers and fathers avoid the sin of abortion.

Pray for Families:

  • PARENTS: Pray that God will give us wisdom and the strength to raise godly children. Help us see the challenges we face as opportunities to train our children toward right thinking and right actions. May God help us to focus on teaching our children the Christian faith, to love the Word of God and to seek to obey His instructions. Help us to disciple our children.
  • GRANDPARENTS: Pray that God would use grandparents to fearlessly proclaim the Word of God regarding sin and God’s love. Pray for their role in the training of their grandchildren and wisdom on how to instill a biblical worldview.
  • FAMILIES AS SALT AND LIGHT: Pray that God would help your family to be faithful in family worship, in fostering sweet unity and cooperation, and in using your family to spread the truth and light of the Gospel.

Pray, Pray, and Pray Some More

  • FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY:  Pray that God will work in the hearts of key federal officials, including President Joe Biden, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
  • For the next several weeks, please pray for the political leaders listed below. Of course, this includes praying for Governor J.B. Pritzker and Juliana Stratton and those who serve in their administration.

A Bird’s Eye View of COVID-19: A Word to Christians

May I be blunt?  The heart of man is just as Scripture says it is, “deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.”  You may not want to hear that, and maybe you don’t believe it. But there Jeremiah 17:9 plainly states this truth. God, in His grace, has provided so that we do not always act as badly as we could act and even now there are glimmers of His grace shining forth.

But, looking at the big picture, things are quite grim. Whether it be the deception of the Chinese government regarding COVID-19, or the politicization of the crisis, or the lying by so many in the Media and government; people are often not inclined to do what is right unless they are squeezed pretty hard. The world is in a crisis yet on every hand we see powerful people either misleading us or turning the crisis to their own purposes! Then, if or when they are forced to do the right thing, they act like it was their plan all along! It would be easy to become cynical!

Trying to get a specific “message” from God regarding the crisis is a fool’s errand. The Book of Job should serve as fair warning to those who think they are able to interpret this crisis for a prophetic word from God. But that does not mean there are no lessons to be learned. There are vitally important truths to be taken from this tragic event that we ought not miss.

First, we are not masters of our destiny. Our lives, the nation–and even the world–can be turned up-side-down in a moment and there is nothing people can do about it! I understand this virus is quite weak and easily killed, yet it has sent the world into panic and has taken millions of lives! If it is weak and easily destroyed, what does it say of us who are defeated by it? Scriptures note that our lives are but a vapor, or like grass that grows up in a moment and is burned off by a hot wind. “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for soon it is cut off, and we fly away.”  (Ps. 90:10). Our tenure here is brief and at risk every day.

Thus, our disregard for the spiritual and eternal is tragic; we are so much like the people in Christ’s day. He rebuked them sharply for their indifference to His words. John the Baptist called the nation to repentance and they mocked him. Jesus came with the message of grace and they crucified Him. He said, “we played the flute for you and you did not dance; we mourned to you and you did not lament,” (Mt. 11:17). God has been gracious to us.  In spite of evils such as abortion and the destruction of marriage, He has been patient. When He allows trials to come, people say He is unloving. We ignore Him when He is kind, and despise Him when He gets tough! It is as Ecclesiastes says, “because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is set in them to do evil.”

The pandemic has exposed the fact that the Left’s efforts to undermine America’s foundations have been tragically successful. No nation can long survive when its citizens don’t know where to turn for truth or who to trust. The Left’s war against America’s Christian morality, which began decades ago, has born rotten fruit in the wholesale lying, deception and misinformation which has accompanied the pandemic. As Christians we know better than to put our trust in men. However, most people do not have this understanding and find themselves confused about the nature of the disease, its treatment, and how to avoid it.  Most solutions offered by government officials and the media push the nation towards a totalitarian political framework as we are informed that we must do what “They” tell us to do, as if “They” really know! It is clear that “They” don’t.

Kipling wrote of maturity being marked by one’s ability to “keep your head when all about you are losing theirs. . . .”  This should certainly apply to those who claim the name of Christ. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus crisis has shown that many Christians do not have a sound theology upon which to arrange their lives. This crisis, as bad as it is, should not knock God’s people off balance.

The virus itself is one problem, but it has been compounded by both government officials and media who have in too many cases allowed their personal political and social agendas govern their perspectives and prescriptions. Those of us who name the name of Christ must do better. We have always known that this life is temporary, but we have become comfortable and have settled in as if this world is all there is. But in our hearts we know better. Let us now act accordingly, prioritizing the eternal over the immediate. Don’t let material losses discourage your faith. Do good to all. Be guided by the fact that it is not stuff that makes life worth living but relationships, first with God and then with others.

Don’t be moved by the panic of the press, or the hysterics of the “prophets.” Sadly, the world has been beset by many pandemics through the ages, and it is not likely this will rank even close to the worst. It is not in itself a mark of the “End Times!”  However, in a real sense we should always be living as if we are in the end times because we do not know when the Master will return. Again, let sound theology bring you peace. God told us to “occupy ‘til He comes,” so we should be busy with His business.

Regrettably, in spite of this crisis, most Americans will probably go back to life as usual once it is over. However, there will be some whose eyes will have been opened to the uncertainties of this life and will be hungry for a sure word from God. Let us not miss those opportunities for ministry!

May it be that this pandemic will focus the attention of millions of Christians on the fact that we are “not of this world” and have been given a stewardship by Jesus Christ to be His ambassadors. We are not to melt into the crowd, but to stand apart, calling, even pleading with our neighbors and friends to come to Christ, abandoning the priorities of the world.

Dr. Carl Trueman: Are We Living in Unprecedented Times?

Derek Buikema, lead pastor of Orland Park Christian Reformed Church in Orland Park, Illinois interviewed one of the most influential Christian thinkers in America today, Grove City College Professor of Biblical and Religious Studies Carl Trueman, for Illinois Family Institute.

Dr. Trueman’s recent book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution brought Dr. Trueman to public consciousness in a way rarely experienced by serious Christian scholars. The book and its subsequent, more concise companion book, Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution, explore how we have arrived at this strange cultural moment in which people claim they are trapped in the wrong-sexed body.

In this second part of Pastor Buikema’s interview, Dr. Trueman confirms the sense many people have that we truly are living in “unprecedented times,” and explores the reasons why this historical moment is unprecedented. He examines the absence of any transcendent justification for morality upon which a stable social order depends and the destabilizing effects of technology.

The Devastating Cost of Rejecting God

“The problem of disbelieving in God is not that a man ends up believing nothing.
Alas, it is much worse. He ends up believing anything.”  ~G.K Chesterton

I heard of a gentleman traveling to a third-world country where driving regulations were minimal and police virtually nonexistent. He noted that in terms of road etiquette it was a matter of “he who drives the biggest truck rules.” So it is where God has been rejected. Lawlessness ensues and the strong oppress the weak. It is no coincidence that in all countries of the 20th Century dominated by strident atheists, the citizens were brutally oppressed. However, removing accountability to God leads not only to lawlessness and tyranny, it also produces moral and spiritual blindness, foolish behavior, and hardened hearts.

For the first time in America’s history less than half of its citizens claim to be Christians, according to recent polls. There have always been scorners in America, but until recently they were largely on the fringe of society. Over the past several decades, however, they have gained a foothold both culturally and politically and have launched an assault against God and Christianity that those who are only superficially Christian are unwilling to bear. When Christ explained to His followers, in John chapter six, that there would be a cost in seeking righteousness, many deserted Him then as well. There is often a cost in following Christ, but there is a greater cost in deserting Him.  America, founded upon biblical truth and principles, cannot survive without them.

Atheism, contrary to all claims to the opposite, has neither an inherent morality nor a compulsion to create it. While atheists may develop an ethic, they must borrow it from elsewhere. Their own morality “document” is a blank page. Nations which have discarded God and religion to become atheistic or secular have only three possible sources for a common morality: cultural traditions derived from their religious heritage, a dominant government, or the will of the majority, should they manage to secure some form of democracy.

In any case, there is no reason to assume that the moral standards of that nation will be or will remain ethical. Atheism’s natural antipathy toward God and religion often leads its proponents to reject much of what is derived from them, creating cultures that do not value traditions or principles associated with religion. Therefore, it is not surprising that most nations dominated by atheists have eventually become hostile to human rights. The notion of humans having objective value and thus unalienable rights is sourced exclusively in Christianity. In the rare cases where kings or emperors were toppled and there was no alternative controlling authority, such as religion, anarchy flourished, as in the case of the French Revolution.

The strange notion, propounded by modern atheists, that the burden of proof for the existence of God lies with us, rather with them to prove His non-existence, reminds me of a person viewing a house and nonsensically declaring that it is easier to believe that the house just happened than that it was built by a contractor. Romans chapter one states that from creation we understand God’s “eternal power and godhead.”  The existence of a universe is as certain a proof of God’s existence as a house proves the existence of a builder! Denying God’s existence is not intellectually based. It is spiritual rebellion.

Romans one declares that there comes a time when God runs out of patience with recalcitrant people and turns them over to their own desires, therewith to be enslaved.  They become bound by sin, reckless of its cost, and unable to understand the causes for their suffering. They grow tolerant of any and all deviant and debauched behavior, living without moral restraint; and the only evil in their eyes is that of someone saying “no” to their evil. An example of this is the interaction of a police officer with a lawbreaker. The yelling that often ensues is not from the officer! Nowadays it is the officer who is considered the offender!

Once people reject God they have no objective standard of right and wrong. Each person assumes he can decide for himself what is good or evil. Isaiah 53:6 notes, “All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way…” In Judges 21:25 we read, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in their own eyes…” The popular challenge one often hears to “follow your heart, because your heart will never lead you wrong,” is the modern version of this serious error. Scriptures admonish us, however, that, “he who trusts in his own heart is a fool,” (Prov. 28:26).

Having rejected Truth, God-haters are forced to live by lies; and while those lies contradict one another, they neither notice nor care.  Anything goes, and woe be to the one who attempts to introduce a normative moral standard! Those who accept the premise of “No God” become gods in their own minds, and the mantle of “god” is a heady thing! One can now draw the lines as he chooses, and when everyone is drawing crooked lines, the only lines not tolerated are straight lines.- because they expose the crookedness of the rest.

Recall the angry and violent response against those who said, “all lives matter!”  It is objectively true that all lives matter, but one dare not say it!  It is like flying into heavy clouds without instruments. Soon, losing sight of the horizon, it is impossible to determine up or down, and unless one escapes the clouds, the situation becomes deadly.  Consider the events of Genesis chapter four where Cain killed his brother Abel. The Apostle John explains that Cain killed his brother “because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.” (I John 3:12). Mark Twain, ever insightful, noted that “nothing is more irritating than a good example.” It remains true today that the wicked persecute the righteous with far greater zeal than the righteous do the wicked. Proverbs 29:2 notes that “When a wicked man rules, the people groan…”

One would think that the painful consequences of godlessness would lead most people to change their behavior. Unfortunately, this is generally not the case. This again is addressed in Romans chapter one. By “suppressing the truth in unrighteousness,” the text notes, people become fools, meaning that they are unable to understand that their pain is the consequence of their own bad behavior. They become, in effect, like children. Try to reason with a three-year-old regarding why his taking another toddler’s toy caused a fight and you will understand the futility of pointing out the atheist’s error of hating God. Hostile God-rejecters do not and will not hear you! God quite literally withholds His wisdom from them! They want what they want and will not be deterred by reason or by pain.

Tragically, the lawlessness created by removing the Bible and Christianity from America’s cultural forums is now devastating the nation. With the elimination of objective truth, people are willing to believe and do whatever pleases them for the moment, as Chesterton noted. This explains why the Left is perfectly fine with anarchy, confusion, and violence. They are not only unconcerned about these things, they encourage them. We find chaos at the borders, lawlessness on our streets, unabated murder in our inner cities, abortion of the innocent unborn, men declaring themselves to be women and women calling themselves men. Criminals are unapologetically released back on the streets.

Violence and riots killed dozens, destroyed hundreds of businesses, and cost billions of dollars in damages in 2020, and the Left justified it as “mostly peaceful demonstrations.” They lie repeatedly, and when caught in lies, simply move on to another lie without embarrassment or apology. It is the modern iteration of Hosea 4:1,2, “There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. By swearing and lying, killing, and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed.”

The nation’s rejection of God is not accidental nor is it based upon a determination that the evidence does not support the existence of a Deity. It is a fist shaken in God’s face and a declared refusal to submit to His rule. It brings with it a cascading flood of costly and even fatal consequences to individuals and the country. The rabid atheism pushing the current anti-God movement is not driven by an honest search for truth, but by pride, self-will, and rebellion. Such things will produce no good.

We also recall Paul’s declaration in Ephesians 2:12 that those who are without God are without hope. If there is a label that applies to millions in America today, it is hopelessness. Depression, suicide, escapism into drugs and alcohol, and the revival of ancient pagan religions testify to the hungering of hearts for meaning yet rejecting the only fountain of truth and life, God’s word.

Rejecting God as sovereign leads necessarily to the exalting of the “Imperial I.” Without God, no one can legitimately claim ultimate authority, which leaves a vacuum that personal pride cannot resist filling.  Individuals crown themselves sovereign, worshipping at their own feet. And seven billion gods walking planet Earth is a recipe for conflict. How often have you heard, “You can’t talk to me that way!” or “Don’t tell me what to do!” or, “Do you know who you’re talking to?”

This is America today! Need I say more?

If a dog bit you every time you tried to pet him, you would learn to keep your hands to yourself. Every culture that has rejected God has turned violent and tyrannical, so one would think we would learn as well. Tragically, most will not. The Scriptures note that, “The wicked shall be turned into Hell, and all the nations that forget God,” (Pslam 9:17).

It does appear that as America forgets God, it becomes more and more like Hell, doesn’t it? But it need not end with that! God’s grace and mercy are great and available to all who will come. He promises,

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

If we turn from sin and earnestly seek His forgiveness, He will abundantly pardon!

Dr. Carl Trueman: How Did We Get Here?

IFI was blessed to be able to interview Grove City College professor of biblical and religious studies and author of The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution Dr. Carl Trueman last fall when he was the keynote speaker at the annual Touchstone Conference held at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. His landmark book has been lauded by cultural critics from Rod Dreher to Ben Shapiro to Al Mohler.

IFI was blessed too by Derek Buikema, lead pastor at Orland Park Christian Reformed Church in Orland Park, Illinois who conducted the interview for us.

In this first four-minute segment, Pastor Buikema asks Prof. Trueman how America got to this place of cultural confusion and disorder. Trueman begins by examining the statement, “I’m a woman trapped in a man’s body,” which Prof. Trueman argues reveals how “feelings have been granted authority. … even over the evidence of our own bodies.” Prof. Trueman argues that both philosophical trends from 18th Century as well as contemporary sitcoms reinforce and propagate the belief that feelings define who we are.

In addition to intellectual trends, Prof. Trueman discusses “material” trends that have contributed to the ascendancy of instability, confusion, and chaos, over stability and order. Those trends include mobility and the manipulation of the human body.

IFI strongly recommends watching the interview with Prof. Trueman and forming small groups to study either The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self or its more concise and companion book Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution.

What Was Sodom’s Sin?

Recently on social media and in the past, various people have claimed that Sodom was destroyed because the citizens of Sodom were not helping the poor. Is it true that the great sin of Sodom was a failure in assisting the poor or is there more that Scripture would state about the great judgment? The city of Sodom is first mentioned in Scripture in Genesis 10:19. Three other cities were in the vicinity of Sodom: Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim. Often the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned together but Sodom stands out in the listing of these cities and is mentioned the most of the four cities in Scripture – 49 times.

In Genesis 18:20 we learn that the sin of both Sodom and Gomorrah was very grave. In the next chapter we learn more about why this description was given. In Genesis 19, two angels, who appeared to look like regular men, visited Sodom. Lot met the two angels at the gate and offered them hospitality at his house. Before they went to bed, the men of Sodom, young and old, surrounded Lot’s house. They called to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we know them carnally.

The word carnally is added by some translations, but the verb to know used here has that same meaning. The clear context is that the men of Sodom intended to engage in perverse sexual relationships with Lot’s two guests. The men of Sodom, as the story unfolds, were clearly not wanting to just say hello to the new guests. This wasn’t an invitation, but a forceful attack.

Lot refused the request. Pressing the limits of hospitality to the maximum, he even offered his two virgin daughters to the men of Sodom. This offer was not accepted and so the men of Sodom attempted to break down the door to Lot’s house. The attempted gang rape would have succeeded in if the angels hadn’t struck the men surrounding the house with blindness.

The rest of Genesis 19 speaks of how Lot and his family were delivered from Sodom before the LORD reigned down brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. Reading this chapter it is clear that  a central part of the sin of Sodom was their perverse sexual desires.

Sodom is mentioned a number of times in the Old Testament following this gruesome account. Israel at times is compared with Sodom and Gomorrah because she also deserved judgment. It is a passage in Ezekiel 16 that adds to our understanding of why judgment came upon Sodom and that some want to use to say Sodom was not judged because of her sexual proclivities.

Ezekiel 16:48  “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done. 49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Indeed, we cannot ignore this passage and what we learn in verse 49 that part of the sin of Sodom was her pride, idleness, and failure to help the poor and needy. But when we read the Bible it is important to not just cherry-pick verses. Without denying anything  in Ezekiel 16:49 we should look at the next verse.

50 And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit.

Verse 50 clearly is a reference to Genesis 19. How do we know that? The same word abomination is used in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 when describing the perverseness of homosexual conduct.

So we do not ignore verse 49, but stopping at verse 49 and saying that the sin of Sodom was that the people didn’t vote for Bernie Sanders and support other redistributionist schemes is to clearly misread Scripture. Verse 50 is just as important.

A final passage from Jude 7 makes this clear.

Jude 7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Christians must never read the Bible to think highly of ourselves. Jesus condemns those who are thankful that they are not like other sinners and boast in their own righteousness. However, we must also not read the Bible to justify the sexual sins of our culture today. The example of Sodom and Gomorrah stands as a testimony today. The call of the gospel to all sinners is to recognize that God’s wrath stands over us until we turn in faith and submission to the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Cor. 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

And such were some of you… If you are reading this message and you know you are still living in your sin and rebellion before a holy God, know that there is mercy and grace shown to those who will confess their sin and turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. There is full cleansing for all sinners!

IFI Prayer Warriors Needed!

We know that the many cultural battles we face today are spiritual battles that cannot be won by relying solely on our own strength and methods. In truth, these battles must first and continually be waged through prayer to our holy, righteous and merciful God.

Ephesians 6:10-13

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Many believe that our compiled problems in this state are a result of apathy, inaction (past and present) and unrepentant sin within the Body of Christ.

And while we celebrate the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Center decision in June, and praise God that Roe v. Wade is no longer the “law of the land,” we realize that Illinois is fast becoming the abortion mecca of the Midwest. Planned Parenthood and other abortion cheerleaders are already opening up new death centers near the borders to accommodate out-of-state victims.

Our state lawmakers seem to want to secure future Planned Parenthood clients with the passage of SB 818 last year, which requires the teaching of depraved “comprehensive” sex-education to impressionable young children in kindergarten through 12th grade in Illinois public schools. Make no mistake, these lessons will encourage our young people to engage in early risky and sinful sexual activity that will only damage them emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is why Democratic state lawmakers also repealed the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act (HB 370) last year. I, for one, am convinced that our foolish and defiled lawmakers are happy to foster an environment that will result in more victims and more blood-money for the abortion industry.

And how about our political corruption problem? From 1970 to 2010, about 1,500 people in Illinois were convicted for corruption. The lack of honest and wise public servants (yes, there are a few) has had devastating consequences: Illinois is ranked 50th for fiscal policy; 45th in unemployment; 3rd in unfunded pension liabilities; 1st in failing schools; has one of the highest sales tax in the nation; the most judges indicted (operations Greylord & Gambat); 32 Chicago Alderman and over 1,000 state and municipal employees in addition to 5 of our last 9 elected governors indicted. That’s more indictments than the other 49 states combined!

The spiritual battle between good and evil — between truth and lies — is ongoing and formidable. Young girls and their unborn babies are victimized by abortion; young children are taught that sexual activity is expected of them and perversion is normal; marriage and parental rights are under assault; addictions are promoted; government schools have become indoctrination camps; gender specific nouns and pronouns are being eliminated; and now some insist that we believe that men can get pregnant.

Isaiah 5:20

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

Can you see the connection between what we condone in the natural and what is taking place in the spiritual? It’s only through fervent prayer and a return to Him by His people that we will begin to see God change our culture.

When you read God’s promise in 2 Chronicles to heal our land IF Christians repent and pray, there’s no denying that our current state of affairs is the responsibility of the Church and that our land is in desperate need of a healing that only God can bring.

2 Chronicles 7:14

…if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

And through our resolve to seek Him and live holy lives He promises to provide everything we need.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

God is waiting for His people to turn to Him. He promises that if we pray according to His will, He hears us. Our God reigns, and the battle is His!

1 John 5:14-15

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.

There’s nothing too big that He can’t correct. God clearly has the answer to the compounding Illinois crises.

Ephesians 3:20-21

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!

James 5:6

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Illinois Family Institute (IFI) is a ministry that trusts and stands upon God’s Word, striving to obey and believing that our ministry actions and purpose cannot be accomplished without fervent prayer and fasting. That is why our IFI Prayer Team must always be a vital and permanent part of our ministry and that is why we are asking you to join us.

The IFI Prayer Team will be asked to regularly pray for our troubled state, our legislators and local officials, as well as the ministry needs of IFI, and more. Prayer requests will include public policy issues, praying for elected officials, and various statewide needs as the Holy Spirit may lead.
