IFI Prayer Team Update

“The prayer power has never been tried to its full capacity. If we want to see mighty works of Divine power and grace wrought in the place of weakness, failure and disappointment, let us answer God’s standing challenge, ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
~ Hudson Taylor ~

Praise God for holding back the same-sex marriage bill!  Reports indicate that it continues to lack the 60 votes needed.

Pray that the church would engage the culture on the topic of same-sex “marriage”. If the church fails to participate, the movement to restrict the church’s ability to proclaim Truth to the darkening culture will grow.

Pray for the 3 openly homosexual House sponsors of the same-sex marriage bill. (Deb Mell, the 4th sponsor, has stepped down as state representative to take a position with the Chicago City Council.) Pray that they would meet the Redeemer of souls.

Representative Kelly M. Cassidy (D)

14th District

Representative Greg Harris (D)

13th District

Representative Sam Yingling

62nd District

Pray that many would turn out for Defend Marriage Lobby Day on October 23rd and stand united in support of marriage as defined by God – one man and one woman.

Pray that God would multiply the efforts of IFI staff and volunteers.

Pray that the pastors and church leaders who have attended the many IFI pastors’ events would go back to their churches and teach God’s purpose for marriage.

Pray also for these Illinois lawmakers.

Senator Mattie Hunter (D)

Representative Kenneth Dunkin (D)

Representative Esther Golar

Schedule:

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM   Prayer Rally at the Lincoln Statue
(east side of Capitol)

11:00 AM – 1:00 PM   Marriage Rally in Rotunda

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM   Prayer Rally  in the Rotunda

1:00 PM – Jericho Prayer Walk around Capitol (meet at Lincoln Statue)

9:00 AM – 3:00 PM   Visit your state representatives

It is critically important that we have a strong showing because Leftist activists continue to press for counterfeit “marriage” (SB 10), which will affect all of society, especially children and religious freedom.  The chief sponsor of the legislation to redefine marriage, State Representative Gregg Harris (D-Chicago), is on record saying that he plans to call the bill for a vote during the fall Veto Session (October 22-24 and November 5-6).

In addition, homosexual activists with the Civil Rights Agenda, Equality Illinois, Stonewall Democrats, Illinois Log Cabin Republicans, and the ACLU of Illinois continue to push hard for the passage of this anti-marriage bill.  They recently launched a two million dollar “Fight Back for Marriage” campaign to pass this bill. Their pledge: “we’ll keep fighting until we win” must be taken very seriously.

A number of high profile politicians are also calling for its passage including President Barack Obama, Governor Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and former GOP State Chairman Pat Brady who is now lobbying for SB 10 on behalf of the ACLU.

We cannot ignore this situation! Illinois citizens will send a strong and clear message to lawmakers by joining us at the Capitol on October 23rd to rally, to pray and to lobby their legislators.

PRE-LOBBY DAY INSTRUCTIONS AND WHAT TO EXPECT:

Know what your state representative looks like before coming to Springfield. To do this, click HERE and type in your address. Click on the representative’s name to access their picture and contact information. Print it out and bring it with you on October 23rd.

Upon arriving at the Capitol, you will go through security and a metal detector. Bring a photo ID. Proceed to the IFI table in the north hallway or attend one of the functions outside or inside the Rotunda. At the IFI tables, you will find people on laptops on one side of the hallway and tables with handout materials on the other side. Please make sure you pick up a button to wear, a sign (which can’t be taken above the first floor), a letter that you can sign and deliver to your state representative, and  a small card to call your rep off of the House Floor (along with the instructions on how to call them off the Floor) if your representative is in session.

There will be volunteers to direct you to the lawmakers’ offices in the Stratton Building by way of the underground tunnel.

Once you arrive at your state representative’s office, ask the secretary if you can have a few minutes with him/her. If you’re able to see them, tell him/her that you are a constituent and have traveled to Springfield to urge them to oppose the same-sex “marriage” bill, SB 10. Ask how he/she plans to vote. Feel free to share your concerns about the bill. Be respectful of their time. Leave the signed letter you picked up from the IFI table. Feel free to add your personal remarks in a kind and respectful manner.

There is a large cafeteria in the lower level of the Capitol. It’s suggested that you bring snacks for the ride to Springfield and back.

IMPORTANT BUS INFORMATION!

We would like to post a list of all buses or church van locations to help people who are looking for a way to get to Springfield. If you’re planning to charter a bus or your church is providing a van, please let us know. Please include the following information which will be posted on our web site: location and time of departure, time of return, number of passengers, cost per person (It’s strongly suggested that you get payment ahead of time.) contact person and phone number.

For those looking for a ride, visit the IFI web site and look for the BUS RIDE button.

PLEASE PRAY that God will continue to hold back this bill. As a believer, your presence as Christ’s ambassador (2 Cor. 5:20) has tremendous spiritual impact. The fact that several thousands will take the time to travel to the Capitol, wearing bright yellow buttons depicting marriage as one man and one woman has more impact than you realize. Many lawmakers will be hard-pressed to vote on a bill that may cost them their next election.

Good News, Bad News and An Opportunity

The good news is that we are less than one month away from Dr. Benjamin Carson being in the Chicago area for our annual Family, Faith & Freedom Fall Banquet on October 4th.  The bad news for those who were still planning on purchasing tickets is that we are completely sold out for more than a week now.  We‘re excited to say that it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest gatherings we’ve ever had!

The Illinois Family Institute team is so grateful for the outpouring of support for this fundraising banquet and for strengthening families across the state. We are confident that this will be a wonderful evening.

There is still time to place an ad in our program book.  It’s a fantastic opportunity for you, your business or ministry to get your message to over 1,100 pro-family supporters.   For more information, please click HERE or call us at (708) 781-9328.

“From all I observed around me growing up and all I read, I quickly realized that, in spite of the circumstances affecting you, the person who had the most to do with what happened to you in life was you. If I wanted to escape poverty, I was going to have to work extremely hard, but this was within my grasp to accomplish. And in a place such as America, no one could stop me except myself.”

~Dr. Benjamin Carson (from his book, America the Beautiful)

A Day of Fasting and Prayer for Illinois – 9/11/13

By Pastor Pat McManus

To those who are focused and determined to see the State of Illinois stand for marriage between one man and one woman, I believe we can do this together as one body.

I have been praying and wanting to see what the next step is for the Church (the Body of Christ) in Illinois and what we could do together. I know that the Lord is concerned about this, most likely more than we are.

I feel it is time to call the Church in Illinois to a solemn assembly and pray as one on a day that the whole state is standing together as one in Him.

In the Word of God the nation of Israel called for a fast and to pray for direction and protection. They fasted and prayed when there were armies coming against them and when they needed to know what God wanted them to do. David fasted and prayed for direction. Nehemiah fasted and prayed. Esther fasted and prayed. We know the Word and I think it is time that we do the Word.

I believe that the Lord is calling the Church in Illinois to come together in different locations throughout the state of Illinois to fast and pray and seek the Lord on behalf of our government. They (the government) need to know that SB 10 is not in the best interest of our state, families or children, and the only one that can communicate that the best is the Father.

As the Body of Christ in this great state we can stand as one and bombard Heaven to turn this state around and convict these leaders to do what is right. I am not dismissing what we have already done and the great work that many have already accomplished but the fight is far from over. We need God’s help and intervention and what better way to get that help as the Church in Illinois stands together and prays and fasts as one on the same day.

Can you envision the delight it would bring to our Father when His people from the north, south , east, and west fast and pray on the same day, seeking God on behalf of the State? What an awesome picture.

Let me also present a few things that might be of benefit. Could it be that we might need to repent for not being proactive in the public square? To repent for our lack of commitment to the values of Godly government? To repent for not challenging those in government positions? For letting them do evil things that have put us in the place we are at today?  Could it be that if we repent God will hear?

We all know His promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14-20, but keep reading. It talks of restoration, blessings and protection. However, if we don’t repent, God warns of destruction. And we don’t want that.

I believe that if we are going to see the Hand of God move in the State we need to move the Church to pray. God’s Word has always been there to give us guidance and to teach us His Will. He promises that if we ask anything according to His Will, He hears us and will give us that which we ask of Him. It’s an incredible promise from the One through Whom “all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) We need to pray and act on God’s Word.

So I propose that we set aside Sept. 11, 2013 to fast and pray by “calling a solemn assembly” for the State of Illinois and press into God and pray that we will see those in government change, and have visitation from the Father of Heaven. It’s His Will that we return to Him with our all our hearts, minds and strength and not have this bill considered.  Will you join us?!

Volunteers Needed!

It’s almost hard to believe, but there are still several state lawmakers who claim they are “on the fence” on same-sex “marriage” legislation, SB 10.  The proponents of same-sex “marriage” have not stopped putting pressure on them and it’s critical that they hear from folks who oppose redefining marriage!

Same-sex “marriage” activists have not taken a summer break and have been in full swing over the summer months while most families take some time off for vacations. They are planning a Springfield rally and have launched  a$2 million dollar campaign effort to put people on the ground in many districts statewide.  According to the Windy City Times, they have hired more staff [that’s in addition to the dozens of paid lobbyists they had last legislative session] “to work specifically in districts where they have experience.”

They’ve pledged “we’ll keep fighting until we win.”

As you know, the Illinois Senate has already passed SB 10 and the bill is still very much alive in the Illinois House through January 2015.  With a veto-proof majority in the Illinois House, a U.S. President, the Governor, Attorney General and Comptroller lobbying state lawmakers to pass marriage redefinition, not to mention a biased news media, we cannot afford to be idle.  Pro-family citizens must speak up and take action.  If we don’t, many “on the fence” representatives will cave-in to the tremendous pressure from the homosexual lobby.  The LGBT community is laser focused and relentlessly pursing their goal, and we must courageously step forward to preserve marriage as God created it. Passing same-sex “marriage” will have devastating consequences to children, businesses and people of faith.

It is vitally important to the future of your children and grandchildren to sacrifice a few hours of your time now to help stop this assault on marriage and the family.  If you are able to volunteer, please do so!

Now more than ever, because of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, we must unite and work to hold back this legislation.

Take ACTION:  Please call the IFI office at (708) 781-9328 to learn more or to sign up as a volunteer. Thank you in advance! We look forward to hearing from you!

IFI Prayer Team Requests

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9

Pray that God…

  • Would breathe new life into His church
  • Would strengthen and protect His people
  • Would give IFI staff and volunteers wisdom and clear direction to organize the upcoming pastor’s breakfast and Springfield Rally/Lobby Day

Pray that pastors and priests…

  • Would not become lukewarm, but would teach boldly about the things of God
  • Would hunger and thirst for God’s ways
  • Would not succumb to the ways of the culture
  • Would lead their people to love God and His Truths with their whole hearts, minds and strength

Pray that…

  • Many pastors and church leaders would attend the upcoming breakfasts and go back and teach their flock about the importance of marriage as one man and one woman
  • Many would understand the importance of standing for God’s definition of marriage and attend the Springfield Rally/Lobby Day on Oct. 23rd
  • Christians would speak boldly about the flawless ways of God
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Richard (Dick) J. Walsh passed away peacefully on July 31st, 2013 at age 80.

Dick was a good friend and will be terribly missed by so many who worked with him over the years as he strived to make this state a better place in which to live. Illinois has lost a pro-life, pro-family, and pro-marriage warrior.

Visitation will be Friday, August 2nd, from 9-11am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 8404 Cass Avenue, Darien, IL.

The funeral Mass will follow at 11:00.

Please keep the Walsh family in your prayers.

Requests for Prayer

Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Psalm 4:1

Pray that God…

Celebrating July 4

The IFI staff and I want to wish you and your family a safe and blessed Fourth of July weekend as we celebrate our nation’s 237th birthday and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

I want to encourage all god-fearing patriotic Americans to  take time to pray and reflect over where we are as a nation and what we can do as individuals to stand for freedom.  We would do well to heed the words we’ve so often heard and read:

if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

And as you petition the Lord, pray that the Body of Christ would truly become the salt and light that we are called to be in our culture. Pray that our nation would be blessed because God is our Lord.  Pray for those brave soldiers scattered throughout the world who are willing to place their lives on the line to defend our freedom.

I encourage you to remember the One who created and continues to preserve us as a nation.  Remember our rich Christian history and thank God for it.  A nation that does not remember where it came from or what it’s foundations are, is easily destroyed by its enemies either from within or without. And history has taught us — more often than not — nations are destroyed by enemies from within rather than from enemies from foreign countries!

A great way to do that is to simply read the Declaration of Independence out loud with your family some time this weekend.

Pray that God will continue to have mercy on America, and preserve religious liberty!

Urgent Prayer Request

Urgent Prayer Request

HB 2675 would expose children to sexually inappropriate material in the name of sex education. The bill could be called for a vote as early as this afternoon or anytime during the next ten days in the Senate. It appears the votes are there for passage. This is very serious.

Please join us in calling out to God, asking for His mercy and protection for children.

Our children’s innocence is truly at stake here. Exposing young children to sexually explicit material and assuming they already are or will be sexually active, will only encourage early sexual experimentation ultimately changing the course of their lives. The bill targets children starting at age 11.

Please join us in praying that God would stop this bill.

Pray:

  • God would hold this bill back between now and when the General Assembly adjourns on Friday, May 31st
  • God would convict those “undecided” that this is not in the best interest of children.
  • Lawmakers would realize that schools already have the option of choosing this type of sex ed curriculum and do not need another mandate.
  • Lawmakers would realize this very sensitive issue is best left to parents and local school officials.
  • Lawmakers would realize that sexual purity should be desired, valued and encouraged in the schools.

We are also asking God to forgive the corporate Church for its apathy towards this volatile issue and others that have contributed to the erosion of our culture.

God gave us the solution to the insurmountable problems we face.

…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Scripture indicates how important children are to Him and the penalty for causing them to sin. We firmly believe that God can stop and wants to stop this bill. But it’s up to us as His people.

with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26

Pray also for these following senators who are uncommitted on HB 2675:

Pam Althoff (R-McHenry)

Bill Cunningham (D-Chicago)

Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey)

Michael Hastings (D-Matteson)

Mike Jacobs (D-Moline)

Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago)

Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford)

Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago)

Marriage Update: The Light at the End of The Tunnel

With approximately three weeks before the Illinois General Assembly adjourns for the summer, we are coming down to the wire!  With the passage of same-sex “marriage” in Minnesota yesterday after Rhode Island and Delaware earlier this month, the homosexual lobby — locally and nationally — has its focus squarely on Illinois.  They desperately want the state of Illinois – home of President Barack Obama – to be the next state to approve of homosexual so-called “marriage.”

We are going to need your help to finish the legislative session strong – both your grassroots assistance and your financial support.

Looking at our fiscal numbers for the first quarter of this year, I am amazed by the amount of money we’ve had to spend to defend marriage.  Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing.  What we are doing – what you are doing – is working!

The problem is, we’ve spent more money than we’ve taken in during the first quarter of this year.  You don’t have to be an accountant to know that cannot continue very long!  We simply cannot continue on this pace without replenishing our resources.

Would you please consider sending your most generous tax deductible contribution you can as soon as you are able?

We appreciate all you have done to defend marriage and support IFI over the years, but we must ask for your help once again.  Your financial contribution right now will enable us to continue to be a voice of pro-marriage and pro-family values now and throughout the summer.

As you may remember, supporters of same-sex marriage predicted that SB 10 would sail through the Illinois House as it did in the Illinois Senate.  After all, the Democrats hold a super-majority in both chambers.  But by God’s grace, it hasn’t.

SB 10 has been stalled since passing in the Illinois Senate 90 days ago, and it is our long-term goal to make sure that it remains stalled and short the 60 votes necessary to pass until the session ends in January 2015.  Our immediate goal is to hold off their last minute offensive until they adjourn for the summer on May 31st

That’s why we need your help right now to continue to advance our work on one of the most, if not the most, critical legislative battles in Illinois history!

Please help us by donating to our work now.  If you are in a position to do so, please consider becoming a Sustaining Partner by making a commitment of financial assistance on a monthly basis.

Finally, whether or not you are able to help financially, please continue to cover us in prayer.  Pray for our state leaders, our elected officials at all levels, and for the ministry and staff of IFI.  Without prayer, our labor is in vain.

Blessings and thank you,

David E. Smith, Executive Director
