Online Voting Registration Comes to Illinois!

Voter Registration Deadline is October 7th

Did you know that it is now possible to register to vote online in Illinois? Add to this the recent expansions in early voting, it is now easier than ever for citizens to fulfill their civic responsibility.   While there are legitimate concerns about potential fraud, there is no reason not to take full advantage of this new law. You can do so by visiting the State Board of Elections website.

Unfortunately, despite such ease, voting rates are still alarmingly low particularly among people of faith. It is estimated that only half of self-proclaimed Christians are registered to vote. What is worse, approximately 50 percent of registered Christian voters actually take the time to cast their ballot.  In contrast, research shows that approximately 90 percent of the homosexual community turns out to vote. Edmund Burke nailed it when he said, “All that is essential for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Why is the light of the world leaving the public square in darkness?

As a 20-year-old, these statistics are particularly discouraging. Like many in my generation, I look forward to starting a career and a family. However, the current state of affairs in our nation is making those dreams more dubious, not to mention difficult. And this is not speaking solely from an economical standpoint but also a cultural one. Whether it is the promotion of deviant sexual lifestyles, a failing public education system, or the increasing hostility toward our Constitutional liberties, these issues stem from the political arena and a have dramatic impact on everyone’s daily lives. One cannot but ponder how different our culture would be if Christians boldly expressed their biblical beliefs in the public square and at the voting booth.

While it is true that politics can be ugly, divisive, and even corrupt, we are called to be the light of the world.  If light isn’t present, darkness consumes. We should not be afraid of darkness, we should overwhelm it (Romans 12:21). As such we are called to have an influence in our culture and that includes the political realm. Society is rapidly changing.  But it doesn’t have to.  It would greatly benefit the entire culture if Christian principles and morals were exemplified in public policy.  Such an integral aspect of life cannot be disregarded. Let us embrace the opportunities we have to bless the culture and fully participate in public life, including the political process through voting. After all, it is now only a few clicks away! Birth Control Advisory Referendum an Election Year Ploy

From the Catholic Conference of Illinois

The Catholic Conference of Illinois issued the following statement on an advisory referendum on mandated birth control. The statement can also be viewed here as a PDF.

STATEMENT ON HOUSE BILL 5755:

Advisory Referendum on Mandated Birth Control

On May 28, three days before the end of the Illinois General Assembly’s scheduled adjournment, a new advisory referendum was proposed for the November 2014 ballot.  A Senate committee on the same day approved the referendum, the full Senate passed it today, and it now goes to the House.

The proposed advisory referendum reads: “Shall any health insurance plan in Illinois that provides prescription drug coverage be required to include prescription birth control as part of that coverage?”

This question ignores important policy detail and lacks any semblance of context.  First, since 2003, Illinois has required the vast majority of health insurance plans operating in the state to cover FDA approved contraceptive drugs for women.  Moreover, beginning in 2013, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has required health insurance plans nationwide to provide contraceptives, the morning-after pill and sterilizations without cost.  The only exceptions to the combined effect of these mandates have been health insurance plans provided by religious organizations who object to paying for contraceptives, abortifacients or sterilizations.  In fact, the constitutional questions of whether corporations owned by religious objectors or religiously-sponsored organizations (such as Catholic hospitals) are exempt from the ACA mandate due to its infringement on their First Amendment rights are before the United States Supreme Court.  The Court’s first decision in this area is expected in June, and no advisory referendum in Illinois has any power to influence or modify its ruling.

The proposed advisory referendum lacks detail and context.  It seeks to misinform and exploit, play so-called identity politics and further divide the people of Illinois.  This effort should be recognized for what it is and rejected.

Illinois Senate Passes the ERA

How did they vote?

This afternoon, the Illinois Senate voted 39 to 11 with 6 voting present to pass SJRCA 75, a completely unnecessary proposal  to amend the U.S. Constitution to eradicate sex as a legitimate characteristic on which to base reasonable distinctions.

The bill now moves to the Illinois House where Representative Lou Lang (D-Skokie) is the chief sponsor.

Bill to Ban Same-Sex Attraction Counseling Fails!

Written by Laurie Higgins and David E. Smith

How did they vote?

Late yesterday afternoon, the Illinois House voted 44 to 51 to reject HB 5569, a legislative proposal by State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) that would have allowed the government to usurp the rights of parents and their children to get the kind of help they want to change unwanted same-sex attraction. HB 5569 was co-sponsored by State Representatives Naomi Jakobsson (D-Champaign), Greg Harris (D-Chicago), Ann Williams (D-Chicago), Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago), Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) and Mike Smiddy (D-Rock Falls).

Click HERE to see how your state representative voted on this legislation, or look at the graphic below.

In an article last month on this issue, IFI’s Laurie Higgins pointed out that the “ultimate motivation behind this legislation is to promote the Leftist assumptions of adult homosexuals who seek to wipe disapproval of homosexual acts from the face of the planet even if doing requires deception, harms children, undermines parental rights, and corrodes fundamental First Amendment speech and religious liberty.”

In a remarkable display of rhetorical excess, Cassidy argued that minors who desire to change their unwanted same-sex attraction through counseling are “horribly and humiliatingly abused.” It boggles the mind that Cassidy would expect her colleagues to believe that every counselor who helps minors with unwanted same-sex attraction “horribly and humiliatingly” abuses their young clients. Further, Cassidy expected her colleagues to believe her without any conclusive studies to support such an outlandish claim.

It defies logic that “progressives” believe that gender-confused minors should be able to receive treatment to change their unwanted  “gender identity” but other teens should not be able  to receive treatment for their unwanted sexual preferences.

It’s curious that Cassidy and her ideological compatriots never bring up “queer theory,” which emerges from the “LGBT” community. Queer theorists hold that “sexual orientation” is not fixed but, rather, is fluid, which means that “sexual orientation” can and, in fact, does change in many people.

Cassidy further asserted that “This treatment plan causes depression, causes suicidal actions and is incredibly harmful to children.” Interestingly, Cassidy did not identify what specific “treatment plan” she was  referring to, nor did she present any research proving that counseling to help minors with unwanted same-sex attraction causes depression, suicide attempts, or harm.

This is a critically important victory for parents and minors, particularly minors who have been sexually abused. This bill would have prevented children from getting treatment to change unwanted same-sex attraction that results from abuse.

It’s also an important victory in that it will offer hope to those in other states who will be fighting this battle soon. Illinois now joins Maryland, Minnesota, and Virginia in defeating bills that seek to prevent minors and their parents from getting the kind of help they want.

Illinois House Passes Another Bullying Bill

How did they vote?

This afternoon, the Illinois House voted 64 to 43 to pass HB 5707, a completely unnecessary proposal by State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago), constituting nothing more than a reiteration of the Bullying Prevention Task Force recommendations that are available to all schools on the ISBE website.  Moreover, the fact that the bill’s sponsors and the ACLU have refused to ensure the rights of students and school employees to opt-out of “programming” and “training” that promote ideas that conflict with their personal and/or religious beliefs reveals the real goal, which is to use public education to promote unproven, non-factual beliefs about the nature and morality of homosexuality and “transgenderism.”

Click HERE to see how your state representative voted on this legislation, or look at the graphic below.  State Representatives Tom Morrison (R-Palatine), Renee Kosel (R-Mokena), and Sandra Pihos (R-Lombard) spoke against the bill.

Unfortunately, Republicans Tom Cross (Plainfield), David McSweeney (Barrington), Jim Durkin, (Burr Ridge) and Kay Hatcher (Yorkville) all voted in favor of it.

The bill now moves to the Illinois Senate.

Judge, State AG Stepping Over the Line on Illinois Marriage Law

A traditional values group in Illinois maintains certain state officials aren’t only usurping the legislative process when it comes to same-gender “marriage,” but they are also violating the law.

At both state and federal levels, making and implementing law is strictly a function of the legislative branch of government – not the executive, and not the judicial. That’s why Illinois Family Institute is upset with the actions of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, federal judge Sharon Coleman (Northern District of Illinois) – an Obama appointee – and a county judge who authorized homosexual marriage licenses for the Chicago area.

“Our attorney general here in the State of Illinois is encouraging our county clerks – we have 102 counties in the state; she is encouraging the county clerks throughout the State of Illinois to go ahead and start issuing marriage licenses before the legislative deadline of June 1,” Institute executive director David E. Smith explains.

According to the homosexual marriage law, that’s the date when it becomes legal. Judge Coleman, says Smith, is overstepping her bounds by implementing the law ahead of schedule.

“What she is doing, along with the Cook County judge, is basically circumventing the General Assembly and telling them You’re irrelevant. We’re going to make law and implement law and modify law the way we feel and we don’t care what you all think,” the family advocate continues. “And [regarding] the legislative process, [she’s saying] We’re going to usurp the process and make our own rules as we go forward.”

IFI is urging state lawmakers and county clerks statewide not to be complicit in what he describes as “gross usurpation of the legislative process.”

Smith sees a parallel between these actions and President Obama bypassing Congress by deciding through executive orders to change what the Affordable Care Act actually dictates. As Smith points out: “We don’t have kings in America.”

Marriage Redefinition Passes in the House

How did they vote?

Sixty-one state representatives in the Illinois House cave in to pressure from Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and the LGBTQ lobby.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Illinois House of Representatives recklessly voted 61-54 in favor of genderless marriage (SB 10) with 2 representatives voting present and 1 not voting.

The debate raged for over two hours with SB 10 with supporters of the bill filling the time with a constant stream of emotion, personal testimony, and accusations of discrimination. Those who spoke out in favor of natural marriage included State Representatives Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), David Reis (R-Olney), Rep. Dwight Kay (R-Edwardsville), Tom Morrison (R-Palatine), Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), and David Harris (R-Mount Prospect).

Former House minority leader Rep. Tom Cross joined two other Republicans, Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove) and Ed Sullivan (R-Mundelein)  in breaking with the party platform and supporting this radical liberal bill.

Responding to the many references to the Civil Rights movement, Rep. Flowers stated, “When I was discriminated against, it is not because of who I love, but because of the color of my skin…Homosexuality has nothing to do with race.” Flowers continued, “Even if the legal definition of marriage was changed, those two people will never be married in God’s eyes.”

Rep. Kay declared, “I’ve heard nothing today about the Scriptures. The only thing I’ve heard is about human rights. So I guess we’ve backed away from our heritage in this nation which we seem to do quite regularly for the expediency of what we wish to do at the moment. And ladies and gentlemen, that’s pride. That’s a belief that you’re better than the very foundation…which we find in the Scriptures.”

The vote came less than two weeks after an estimated 4,000 people descended upon Springfield supporting the definition of marriage as being between one man and woman on October 23rd.

SB 10 will go to the desk of Governor Pat Quinn who has publicly expressed his eagerness to sign the bill.

One Week to Defend Marriage Lobby Day

As a father of six children, I often wonder what Illinois will be like in twenty years.  What will it be like for your children and grandchildren?

We cannot know for sure.  We can’t predict the future.  Only God knows for certain.

I do know, however, that things are sure to be worse, much worse for our children, if we don’t do something now to stop the moral collapse, which will be hastened if our lawmakers undermine marriage by legalizing same-sex “marriage.”

I am doing everything in my power to prevent that from happening.  I’ve put tens of thousands of miles on my car and logged weeks away from my family to fight this evil agenda in 2013, and I need your help today.

I’m not alone in making sacrifices.  Many courageous people are stepping up and doing their part, including the staff and a dozen or so dedicated volunteers at IFI.  I need you to do your part today.

The Chicago Sun Times admitted this week that Leftists are still “shy” of the votes they need to pass homosexual “marriage.”  And that is because you have refused to stay silent.  Now we must finish what we started earlier this year.  We must show up in Springfield again.  The politicians need to know how strongly you feel about this attack on common sense, reason, and decency.  They have to understand that marriage redefinition isn’t as popular as some politicians and media pundits want you to believe it is.

And our politicians need to know that we aren’t going to allow them to ignore the best interests and rights of children and individual religious liberties without a fight.  I can do no less for my children.  It is my duty.  It is our duty.

A friend told me about a group of WWII veterans from Iowa that drove all the way to Washington D.C. this week. They risked arrest by passing through the barricades set up by the president to keep veterans from viewing their monuments. We should be inspired to defend marriage with the same courage, conviction, tenacity, and sacrifice that the greatest generation fought to defend American principles and to honor their fallen.  If we don’t stop the enemy from achieving his goal of destroying the family, there won’t be any monuments to visit.  America will collapse.  It is only a matter of time.  Read Genesis 19.

I need your help today to continue the fight against this anti-family agenda.  It takes a lot of money to pay staff, keep the bills paid, maintain our full-time office, host Pastors’ Breakfasts, travel to every part of the state, run ads, send out mailings, produce a timely and relevant website, and organize a huge Lobby Day(s).  In just one week the October 23rd Lobby Day will be over.  The bills won’t wait for next week.

And the truth is, the bills are mounting, and they must be paid.

We don’t get any money from the government or from the mega-rich like our adversaries do.  We rely on the Holy Spirit moving in the hearts of his people: moms and dads, grandmothers, and grandfathers from all across the state.

Would you show your support for this cause and our work. Would you take a couple of minutes to make an online contribution?

Maybe you cannot be in Springfield next Wednesday.

You can make a donation.

I don’t hesitate in asking for your financial support.  I am not ashamed.  I’d beg you for your support if that would help.  This cause is that important to me, and the Illinois Family Institute is that effective.

I know it is important to you as well.  Please help your Illinois Family Institute remain strong in this fight.

Thanks for not delaying in making your contribution.

God be with you and with the great state of Illinois.

Illinois Family Institute

Headed Back to Springfield

The work to stop the redefinition of marriage (SB10) is not just about defending God’s institution of marriage. It’s about the best interests and rights of children and natural families, the health of communities, and individual religious liberties. It’s about standing up and speaking out about the war on conservative people of faith and the attack on our civil rights to freely practice our faith and live according to our conscience.

Same-sex “marriage” proponents deny that children have a right to be raised by both a mother and a father—preferably their own biological mother and father. The selfish desires of adults in inherently sterile relationships who want to recreate the natural family trump the rights of children to be raised by their biological parents.

There is a chance that SB 10 will be called for a vote later this month during the first three days of the veto session (Oct.22-24). However, LGBT proponents are divided on when to call this bill for a vote. One camp wants a vote just to get an official roll call and to identify the lawmakers they need to work on. But this could backfire as they are still short the votes necessary to pass it. In addition, it would certainly be national news to have same-sex marriage fail in deep-blue Illinois. That is why other LGBT proponents are on record saying they should not call the bill until they are absolutely certain they have 60 votes.

When the fall veto session begins in less than two weeks, we can help put an end to this pernicious effort to destroy true marriage by sending a strong, clear message to our state lawmakers:  “You do not have the moral authority to redefine marriage!”

But in order to do that, we need your support.  Here are three ways you can help:

  1. Take ACTION:  Click HERE to send an email or fax to your state representative today.  Ask him/her to stand firmly and courageously against SB 10, and warn him/her not to be persuaded by the emotionally manipulative and intellectually hollow rhetoric of the homosexual lobby.

  2. Join us at the Capitol in Springfield on October 23rd for our Defend Marriage Lobby Day. We need thousands of like-minded people from every corner of the state. If you would like to find a bus that is traveling to the Capitol, please click HERE. If you a chartering a bus and it is not on our list, please call us with the details at (708) 781-9328.

  3. Click HERE to chip in $10 or $15 today and make sure Illinois Family Institute has the resources we need to mobilize supporters of natural marriage across the state in the days before the fall veto session. Your contribution matters.

God tells us in Proverbs that “a righteous man who gives way before the wicked” is “like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain.”

We must remain vigilant and must continue to speak out against these efforts to redefine God’s institution of marriage. We cannot afford to remain silent as the Left continues to attack this critical social institution.

With less than two weeks left before the start of the legislature’s veto session, we must continue building support for the freedom to marry.

Your contribution of $10 or more today will help Illinois Family Institute continue to run the strongest possible campaign to ensure victory in the veto session.

Thank you for everything you’re doing to stand for the family.

Illinois Family Institute

Broad Legal Precedents Support Illinois Gay Marriage Ban

Thomas More Society Argues that Legal Authority Contradicts Plaintiff’s Claims

Yesterday, Thomas More Society special counsel Paul Linton argued before Judge Sophia Hall in support of the Thomas More Society’s motion to dismiss two lawsuits brought by homosexual activists, represented by the ACLU and Lambda Legal, challenging the constitutionality of Illinois marriage law, reserving marriage to one man and one woman.

“Today, constitutional scholar Paul Linton cited overwhelming legal authority that contradicts and undermines plaintiffs’ ostensible legal basis for their attack on marriage,” said Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society.

“Plaintiffs’ counsel repeatedly argued that homosexual couples shouldn’t be denied the right to marry because they love each other. But this ignores the purpose of marriage, which is founded on the biological, scientific truth that only male-female unions may be blessed with offspring — little boys and girls — whether planned or unplanned, for which the institution of marriage affords a stable framework within which these infants may be nurtured, reared, and educated to adulthood.”

“Indeed, arguing that marriage should be available to any human beings who profess to love each other not only ignores unique biological fruitfulness of male and female unions, but it also makes us wonder when — and why — plaintiffs would ever draw the line. Stretching plaintiffs’ rationale to the limits of their logic, why or how could they bar or limit the legality of ‘marriages’ between brothers and sisters, so long as they profess ‘love’ toward one another, or between cousins of close consanguinity, let alone polygamy, or polyandry, or even polyamory.”

“Thus the plaintiffs’ rationale goes far beyond the pale, founders on its own illogic, and affords no good reason at all for overturning our traditional, classic understanding of this vital social institution — which so many deem the cornerstone of our civilization — and which our Illinois General Assembly recently upheld.”

“Furthermore, contrary to plaintiffs’ contentions to the contrary, we hold firm in our belief that every child, if at all possible, should have both a mother and a father, and that society should promote this ideal to the fullest extent possible. We stand confident behind our legal arguments which have been upheld repeatedly in trials and appeals around the country.”

Judge Hall said that she will issue her ruling on the Thomas More Society’s motion to dismiss the homosexual lawsuits challenging Illinois marriage as unconstitutional, on September 27, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Cook County Circuit Court, 50 West Washington Street, Chicago, Illinois Room 2301.

U.S. House Votes to Ban Late Term Abortions

How did Illinois’ Congressional Delegation Vote?

On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 228-196 on a bill to protect unborn children nationwide during the last four months of pregnancy, when their nervous systems are developed and they are capable of experiencing excruciating pain.

The bill is called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 1797), and it’s chief sponsor is U.S. Representative Trent Franks (R-AZ).  The proposal is based on a model bill written by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), which has already been enacted in nine states.  H.R. 1797 would extend the life-saving policy to the entire nation, protecting unborn children of 20 weeks fetal age or later.  It mirrors 20-week abortion ban laws passed by some states, and lays further groundwork for the ongoing legal battle that pro-lifers hope will eventually result in forcing the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that  legalized abortion.

This historic bill would prohibit the termination of unborn babies capable of living outside the womb.   This move comes in light of the revelations of numerous late-term abortionists who, like Kermitt Gosnell, have killed children born alive in abortion clinics by jamming scissors in their necks or strangling them.   No civilized nation should allow such barbarism!

Of Illinois’ 18 U.S. Representatives, 6 voted to end painful late-term abortion on innocent helpless children while 12 voted to continue. Democrat Daniel Lipinski joined Illinois Republicans who all supported this bill. We’ve also indicated in the list below, the Congressmen who co-sponsored this bill.

IFI greatly appreciates the 6 Illinois members of the U.S. House who voted in favor of H.R. 1797.

It is widely believed that the U.S. Senate will ignore this bill. Furthermore, the White House has already said that President Barack Obama would veto it if it ever reached his desk, saying it is “an assault on a woman’s right to choose” and “a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade.”  You may remember that as an Illinois State Senator, Mr. Obama repeatedly voted to allow infanticide to continue unabated in Illinois hospitals.
