Grade School Student Sexually Assaulted by Older Student

On January 29, 2025, a teacher from central Illinois whose daughter was sexually assaulted and raped, joined two local Republican lawmakers to support a bill aimed at protecting students.

HB 2739 and SB 98 would require Illinois school boards to expel students who sexually assault others for a minimum of one year. This initiative stems from the teacher’s personal experience and seeks to address gaps in current state law, which does not mandate expulsion for such offenses.

This is woefully lenient. We know that those who have committed sexual assaults are more likely to reoffend… therefore, putting an offender back into a school environment may create more victims.

As of April 11, 2025, both bills have stalled out without even so much as a committee hearing.
