Nativity Scene Returns to Illinois Capitol
The Springfield Nativity Scene Committee will hold its 8th annual event on Tuesday, December 1st, from 12 Noon until 1 P.M. The display depicting the birth of Jesus Christ will, once again, stand in the center of the Illinois state capitol Rotunda throughout the Christmas season. Illinois Family Institute is a proud sponsor.
The mission of the Springfield Nativity Scene Committee is to honor the birth of Jesus Christ and to inform the media and the public that this display of our religious faith in the public square is guaranteed by the U. S. Constitution. The Nativity Scene is legal because it is temporary in nature and is privately-sponsored.
The opening prayer will be led by the Rev. Bernie Lutchman, President of Business Men In Christ of Springfield. Music will be provided by Melessa E. Tyus, Worship Leader, Forward in Faith Evangelistic Ministries of Decatur.
Speakers will be Thomas Brejcha of the Chicago-based Thomas More Society; Rev. Christopher House, Chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield; Beth Rogers of Springfield; Rev. Mark Tyus, Pastor of Forward in Faith Evangelistic Ministries of Decatur; and Henry Johnson, Elder at Jefferson Street Christian Church in Lincoln.
Directly following the Nativity Scene celebration, Chaplain Steve Holden of Wreaths Across America will honor our military by placing a wreath in front of the flags representing all branches of the U.S. military.
The Nativity Scene display will be available for viewing in the Rotunda, located at 301 S. 2nd Street, during regular business hours. Anyone interested in singing Christmas songs by the Nativity Scene should contact Salli Chernis, Secy. of State’s office, Dept. of Physical Services, at 217-782-8996. NOTE: Music is limited to the noon hour.
