NBC’s “The Playboy Club” is set to debut this evening in primetime and Morality in Media is asking just what type of message NBC is trying to send.

“‘The Playboy Club’ will be as exploitive of women as Playboy magazine is itself,” predicted Dawn Hawkins, executive director of Morality in Media (MIM).

The October 2011 issue of Playboy, as noted on its cover, provides a guide for the sexual exploitation of women in an article titled, “Gentleman’s Guide to Having an Affair.”

“NBC and its parent company, Comcast, should be ashamed to promote the Playboy brand. NBC’s partnership with Playboy attempts to validate the boorish and misogynistic behavior which helped lead to the modern women’s movement against the very sexism it is promoting in the show,” Hawkins said.

“The content of ‘The Playboy Club’ will not only be exploitive of women but possibly a violation of federal indecency laws,” said Patrick Trueman, MIM’s President.

A small team of volunteer monitors from MIM will view the show for possible indecent content, Trueman said and complaints will be filed with the Federal Communications Commission. The team will also keep track of advertisers who will be contacted and urged to put their money into more wholesome television programming.

Citizens are urged to sign a pledge at www.CloseTheClubOnNBC.com, not to watch the show, and to boycott sponsors.

“Our goal is to make it unprofitable for NBC/Comcast to exploit women. Thousands have signed the pledge so far, giving us an army of volunteers to fight this exploitive show,” Hawkins said.

Morality in Media, Inc., is the leading national organization focused on opposing pornography and indecency through public education and the application of the law. MIM is leading The War on Illegal Pornography, a coalition of more than 115 national and state groups whose goal is to stop the distribution of illegal pornography.
